Question Speedo/Odo?

I'm sure this has been answered before, but what is the probable cause of my speedometer and odometer turning on and off eratically, TOGETHER. If the speedo starts waving everywhere, the odometer still works, but then when the speedo goes limp to zero, the odometer stops too. Is this the cable, something electrical?

Thanks for the help.

It's on the driver's side of the tailshaft housing. Often they are just loose.
