Speed sensor problems

Newbie here, but thrilled to have found a site with so much info and a vast wealth of knowledge on one of my favorite things in this world. After lurking for a few weeks now, I've been researching this site religiously and have great plans to enhance my ride -- as time and $ allows (newborn at the house! Our first)

I have a '92 Club Cab LE edition, 2WD, Heavy Duty auto trans with towing package (aux oil cooler and trans cooler) that has me a bit perplexed. On some occasions, most often on a morning after it's rained the night before, I'll get going to work to find the speedo reading very high numbers. I'll be doing about 35mph when the speedometer says I'm doing around 80mph. It goes back to zero at a stop, but sort of quivers as I start off and rises well beyond my actual speed. After driving for a few miles and operating temp is achieved it seems to go away. The only common denominator is that this seems to only happen on mornings that it's at least very humid, and only after the truck hasn't run since the day before. I'm wondering if anyone else has ever seen this. Speed sensor on the back driver's side of transmission?

Thanks in advance,

Tripp

Actually, I have a similar problem - speedo always reading 1.5 to 2 times high since the speed sensor fell off and dragged on the road for 50 miles before I spotted it.
In your case, I would suspect moisture in a connector. The one at the speed sensor or at the PCM.
Does the odometer turn fast as well?

I THINK it does, but I'm really not sure. I don't break 45mph on the way to work when this usually happens.

Then the first thing to do is unplug the connector at the speed sensor (on the transmission) clean it and put some grease on the pins before you reconnect it.

Does your speed sensor have a 90* adaptor where it exits the trans? The 2wd Getrags have a combo 90* adapter gear reducer at the trans end. I got one a few weeks ago for my 91 2wd. Part # 04428483 (mopar no.). I can't find the invoice, but I ordered thru www.chryslerpartsdirect.com. About $80 as I recall.
