Angry So I Got Mad and Broke a Window in the Truck...

... oh wait, that should have said "I broke a window in the truck and got mad, then cut my hand on the EBA glass."

I was at the car wash and the only thing I can figure is that while my fat behind was poking out one door or another while vacuuming the carpets and removing fossilized french fries from under the seats, I must have touched the electric lock button, cause the door blew shut when I got out with the vac hose and presto, I was locked out of my own truck. My cell phone was locked in the truck, otherwise I would have made this Sprint Roadside Assistance's problem. I was in LA and I looked around, everything was a Mexican restaurant and I immediately decided that my chances of being able to borrow a phone were nill. Not a single payphone in sight, either.

My toolbox includes a few pirces of stiff ground wire. I figured I could use that to work my way in through the little side vent windows, push the lock button and be home free. After several attempts at that I gave up and began working on the rear vent window behind the driver's seat. This had much more give and I was actually able to get most of my hand in there and it looked like I was gonna be able to just slide my little wire with hook over to the lock and pop it when pow, the side vent window shatters. And of course, my hand got all cut up with millions of pieces of safety glass embedded. After more than one four letter word, I got control of myself, removed the glass from the frame and gave the car wash vac another round of quarters and vacuumed up all the little pellets everywhere. Then I went to Home Depot and got a roll of Duct Tape and taped up my window.

I hate electronic locks. They are too easy to accidentally lock. I am going to disconnect them in the morning, either that or I am going to put an override switch somewhere later on. Its not like locking your truck actually secures it, they'll just smash a window if they want something. Anymore, I never lock vehicles. No point, really. So anyway, anyone know where I get a side vent window? I didn't bend the metal frame all up, is that something a glass place can just make a new piece for and slide it in? Or do I need to go junkyard hunting. This is the extended cab version and the window is the one right behind the driver's seat door.

that sucks! i had something like that happen once. i went to richmond to scrap metal then after that i had to go to hayward to pick up a car. i was dead broke! not even a dollar on me! well after i get the check from the scrapper and get the car in hayward i needed fuel. i stopped by the companies bank to cash the check. i end up sitting there for an hour for them to clear the check then they tell me they cant cash it because its not in the system yet. so here i am in hayward 75miles from home with less then a quarter tank of fuel!!! my friend who was with me gave me all the money he had but i still didnt think i had enough fuel to get home. when driving by oakland i realize walmart will cash the check!! so after i get my money (i was so happy to have money for fuel so i can get home!) i go out to my truck and realized i locked my keys in my truck!!!! i go back in walmart and buy a pack of screw drivers and pop the vent window lock open, return the screw drivers and get the hell home!!!

I keep a cheapo key in my wallet just in case...

I'd check the junk yard for a window first. I believe that the window/frame are all one piece to include the hinges. Not too bad to replace. Just need to pull the trim from the inside to get at the hinge mount screws.

Duct tape a key to the back of your licence plate. Then all you need is a dime to unscrew the plate.

I drill a hole in my spare keys and screw it under the number plate. I do this on every vehicle I have.

I locked my keys in the truck one time, a piece of wire worked great with the right amount of fishing around. Of course, I have manual locks I'm sure its not as simple with electric locks.

I have also broken some glass too, but in the opposite order, meaning I got mad and then broke it. It was somewhat of an accident though, I'll explain. You see, I had my truck repainted 2 summers ago, and when they put the windshield back in, they didn't put the weatherstripping on right, so there are a few pinhole leaks that I have been unable to locate. These little leaks create extremely annoying whistles at highway speeds, which tend to drive me crazy. Now normally, a little love tap in the right location would fix the issue temporarily. One day, with a 20 mph headwind and my patients running thin, I hit it a little to hard; 16 year old glass and one too many love taps gave way to a nice spider crack about 4 inches in diameter in the middle of my windshield. I am reminded every day of that moment of stupidity.

So while I'm on that topic, where can I get a cheap windshield?

I'm working from memory but I think that's flat glass. If so, any glass shop should be able to cut a piece to fit. Don't know whether it would be cheaper than a salvage yard window or not.

I do the same... Although, I have locked myself out anyway ! Used the hiden key and did not put it back. Once on a jobsite with the trailer still in use, I was mad enough to grab a hammer and go for the wing window. It took three full swing, hard blows! Unreal...

AAA will make a plastic key for your car or truck at no charge. Keep it in your wallet, if you leave your wallet in the truck then I think your SOL.
