Smoke screw question
Ok now that I have the goerend converter in I see the turbo lag that everyone is talking about with these trucks. I never really had much lag before because the converter slipped so bad that the lag was almost not there at all. I also have ALOT of smoke till it spools up. If I try to reduce the smoke before spool up will I increase the turbo lag?

Well I will have to try it then and see what happens. I was just thinking that less fuel would mean more time to spool up making lag worse.

You need fuel to make heat and heat is what spools the turbo up so if you reduce the fuel you will increase lag. Upgrade the turbo and the lag will disappear.

Heat is what spools the turbo ? Not air flow ? One should or could say the following, "more of the ideal air-fuel mixture spools the turbo ......... " but simply saying heat is confusing to me. Please clarify.

What I tried on the setup on my old heap was backing the smoke screw pretty much all the way out, and my AFC is around 1.5 turns from bottomed out. If you want less smoke, the AFC is going to help even though it's going to increase lag time. I have a little more than a grey haze at WOT with this.

I guess my truck is an exception to that rule then. My star wheel and smoke screw are all the way up and using an M&H M2 pin. No lag.

Gas expansion spools the turbo true. Perhaps dumping a lot of (relatively) cold fuel into the cylinders at first provides more cooling than a balanced more complete burn to spool the turbo faster (at first)

the gasses from combustion are still expanding coming out of the exhaust manifold. This expanding energy is superheated expanding and pushing on the turbine wheel, spinning up the turbo.

I would run the afc as tight as it will go--smoke screw flush with the inside of the top and spring wound up tight. At that point, there shouldn't be much smoke at all before spool, though it will be slow to spool. Then, slowly start loosening the starwheel, maybe 2 turns at a time, untill it comes up on boost nicely. Then run the smoke screw down in the same manner untill you get a light puff on tip-in. There is a fine line with afc tuning, especially once you've made some mods to the tranny.
