Since You Guys are my Buddies....

I figured I'd share something we (as in Diesel Power mag) have been working on for a while, trying to set a new World Record for the fastest speed towing a trailer. We initially thought of doing it with my First Gen, but once we decided to try on a dry lake bed it was out cause it was 2wd. Running a 4x4 just seemed safer. To that end, we're using PPE's duramax, which just put down 760rwhp at 52psi. We also have lots of nitrous "just in case."

The record was 125mph by a Viper, then an Escort Cosworth did 128mph, top gear tried to beat it (most famous attempt) and blew up their EVO at 125. Then a team with a twin turbo Mercedes crushed it a couple years ago with a 139mph pass. So that's what we're shooting for.

Friday we did some testing! The check out pass was 104mph on GPS, and a no-nitrous pass with a little pedaling hit 125mph! So we're looking pretty good, the truck was still pulling when I lifted (I was the only one to volunteer for the driving job ) so I think we can get darn close to the record soon once we turn the truck up a little bit.

It was in interesting experience to say the least driving 125mph....on dirt....with a trailer

Lol!

I would caution agaisnt 4wd and high speeds, even on dirt. A good weight distribution hitch will help to plant the nose on the 2wd.

A WD hitch would keep the trailer from swaying back and forth also. What kind of trailer tires are you using, pretty much all of them are not rated for much speed.

Yeah, kinda wish the truck had a cage, but still feels safer than LA traffic

Also, for the record we're going for, any type of fancy hitches are not allowed, as is anti-sway control. They did allow us to put on tires, which were hard to find speed and load rated....finally found some 15 inchers as stock replacement tires for a 1989 Taurus SHO.

Freaking awesome. Does everyone have to use the exact same trailer?

Isn't America the best!!!!

This is the record that we're going after....their camper looks a little more aero, but about the same size. We just plan on pushing through with pure horsepower. That's the American way anyhow!!

Needs a splitter, spoiler, and side wings to keep it stable!

It would have been cooler if it was done with a dodge...but any diesel truck breaking that record is cool in my book.

Hope all goes well, and safe, for you on your attempt.

HAHAHA I can just imagine seeing that ! I remember one year driving my suburban down the Baja through the catavina boulder fields at 105 mph pulling a little home depot trailer with 3 atv in it that trailer was whipping so bad I was afraid to back off the gas and the folks with me were waiting for one of the ATVs to jettison out the side .that would be fun to see!

i feel like this record is simply, who has the biggest stones to go the fastest with a trailer behind it.
