Question should i kill the KDP?

i just got off the phone with the local diesel shop and they quoted me 1200 to kill the kdp on my truck- woooowww is all i said- my friend says not to worry about it b/c if it hasn't come out in 234,000 miles its not gonna come out, what do you guys think- kill it or the hell with it? yes i can turn a wrench pretty **** good but the guy also told me its like a 6 hour job, should i bother- im gonna strip all the panels off the truck anyways when i paint it so ill have the room to get in there... i dont know- your wise advice will be helpful

thanks justin

1200 is too much to do just the KDP. My mechanics charged me $770 to do the KDP, speed sensor, and rebuild the vacuum pump after the bearings exploded and shot inside the engine. So I would say they are ripping you off. I would kill the KDP just to have peace of mind. Since they were taking the timing cover off they said they would tab it for me. No I don't have to worry about it falling and breaking the timing gears that are already chewed a little due to the vacuum pump bearing but its fine.

Milage does not matter! I did not know of the KDP until I started looking at this site. I decided to do mine just for the peace of mind. 400,000 miles and it was just about to fall out! I did mine myself and it is a piece of cake.

thanks guys, i guess i was a little mad but yeah, i looked it up, either the housing or the kdp are made of aluminum so it has a tendency to shrink or expand

thanks for putting some sense in my head

Just pulled mine at 223k and it was working its way out as well..

Definitely do it regardless of mileage.

i would deffinately kill it.A.S.A.P .mine came out and it chewed all the teeth off the timing gears and broke the cam in two pieces. so i did a complete rebuild that was about $3500,in the end and i did all the work. but i did all performance parts while it was down, so it will be a little less just to have it fixed. so i would suggest gettin this done. i only had 125,000 miles on it wen this happened

Naw, wait for it to fall through the timing gears and destroy the engine.

$1200 is ridiculous, though. 2 hrs shop time and $50 worth of parts ought to cover it. Depending on local labor rates it should cost between $200 and $400.

do it

It is a little time consuming, but a real easy fix.

If you pay 1200 bucks to get it done, you ****** away 900 dollars of it.

I'd recommend taking a saturday and doing it yourself.

You get to see some cool stuff when you remove that front cover too...all those heavy gears...coooool!

Also, I would not bother with purchasing the kit to do the replacement. All you really need to do is peen the collar where the pin would slide out of and you are done.

Really all you nede to buy is the gasket for the front cover. Good time to replace your serp belt as well.

Do it... we did'nt even tab ours... we peened over the edge of the hole where the KDP sits so it can't come out...

Hammer and chisel.

Mine was 1/8th of an inch out. That was with 220,000 on the clock. When you are in there do the case bolts also, 3 out of the 5 on my truck had worked loose. A mechanic out here where i am at charged me $200-$300 to do it. Hope this helps... Justin

Well, I know this has came up before, but Knowbody even mentioned any of the bolts being loose either... Heck a few of mine I unloosened by hand.. My motor had 186 and it was about 1/4" from peeking out.. Definatly do the deal if you plan on keeping it.. But don't pay 1200 bucks, Heck Ct isn't that far from pa... Get ahold of Wanna and you can be #71... If I was going have anybody do mine.. It would probably be him..
