Shifter losing the gear-Getrag 360 '90' 4x4 Cummins

I am new here so dont know if you all have talked previously on this. Is there a decent fix for the gear shifter falling off the gear sometimes?? It flops all over and stays in same gear till you go back and nuzzle it back on that gear. Then it shifts normally for quite awhile till it happens again. I am having someone with a lift,a jack, and some 'heat' take the tranny out to put in a new clutch in next couple days. Just wonderin if I can take the 'forks' off the top and have them built up by a pro welder,to make them like new again??? OR is this NOT an easy fix like this???

Was thinking of converting to a NV4500 but reading here tells me they arent the best either. I am MORE concerned with money than rodding or cool 'purty',,,I just want more reliable transportation besides waiting for it to get real worse real quick at the 'worst' possible place and time.

Was told $700 buckaroos for the top piece that makes this better,,,at that price and condition of my truck,,,guess I will risk awhile longer. Darn thats just too much money for such a small part of a tranny. Is there a better or cheaper fix for my small slight problem??? Will it get worse quickly??? Can I build it up to make 'better' than it is today???

Tanks fer any info!!!--d--

that floppy stick might be from a loose shift tower, ...if yu're going in from the top anyway you might get away with a little retorquing, ...here's hopin' And welcome to the Forum, ...you'll get lots better talent than me around here. ...

$700. sounds real steep for a top cover. There's an outfit in Las Vegas that quoted me less for a rebuilt topcover.
They say you can't rebuild the tops, but I bought a shift fork from these guys and installed it myself. The icing on the cakle was it even worked and fixed what was wrong with my Getrag 360. I even put a bearing, seal, and synchro kit in it after the shift fork. Make sure you set the preload by the thread postings and the transmission manual.
PM me if you want their website. I like to save save money and build reliability too. I can buy a lot more parts with the money I save in labor.
Good luck!
