Sharp Turn Problem.

When I make a sharp left u-turn leaving my house the front left tire I think feels like it is trying to climb on its self.
Have had the tread on two older tires used on the left front come off.
Is it the toe-in, caster or camber that is causing this?

Put a set of jack stands under the axle and turn it over hard left and see what is coming in contact. All you may need to do is adjust the steering stop on the knuckle.

I didn't think there was a way to adjust the caster/camber on these trucks?

If you search the kingpin threads, you will find that there are companies that make offset replacement parts / shims to alter caster / camber. Disassembly of the kingpins / axle is required.

I believe Bruce has a 2wd. I don't know anything about them. Do they have concentric adjusters like other A-frame cars? Or is that eccentric? Figure I'd better cover my hiney before my personal linebacker hits me ...Mark

2WD? If so, you'd better check the upper A frame bushings ASAP. I've see a few wear through the A frame and come off. The only indication they had was something weird going on in a sharp turn.

When you say it's trying to climb on itself, what exactly are you describing?

If it is a 2wd, there is no way to adjust the steering knuckle stops unless you grind some material from them. They are actually the other end of the strut rods. The upper control arms do have eccentric washers for adjusting camber/caster.

I've seen some upper arms rust, crack, and even fold up!

Jack it up and inspect pronto! Mine was cracked. I dug out all the rust and welded in a chunk of rebar to make it solid again.

Another friend wasn't so lucky and folded the arm right up.

It feels like the tread is folding in the sharp left turn.
Have lost the tread on 2 tires front left side.

Bruce, how is the wrist? Were you able to get the front end off the ground and check the A-frame bushings? It sounds like that may be the problem...Mark

Mark,
The cast has been off for a month now.but the wrist still hurts.
I have been going to occupational therapy once a week.
Well be able to jack the truck up.
If I take the tire off don't know if I can get it back on.
Have trouble turning a screw driver and drinking soap with a spoon in a deep bowl.
Can turn the wrist about half to two thirds of normal
Was told with my age of 76 it will take about a year to not feel the pain and back to normal. This is the BLANK when you get old and still feel like 40.

Jacked up both sides of the front end on stands.
The upper A-Arms on both sides were O.K
The lower A-Arm on the drivers side that fits into the frame with the bushing and bolt was not in the center as on the other side with about 1/8 inch clearance from side to side to the frame.
On the drivers side the lower A-Arm is to the rear with no clearance to the frame. The left side closes to the front bumper has clearance.
The frame is showing wear when the wheel goes up or when in a left Turn and the body goes down.
Hope you understand this.
