Mine was non intercooled but i swapped the parts from a 92 wen u say tight. I can get one rib to barely start over the alt on the very edge or a tiny bit to seem like it wants to go on the water pump this is just really messing with me almost like they might have had a prob on a certain run of gates belts but now i think i might b trying to rationalize my "incompetence"

Just make sure you have the belt all the way on the crank pulley.....thats screwed me more than once, since it's kinda hard to see down there. We got 2 ribs on my buddy's alternator and then just bumped the ignition to finish rolling it on.

From: A 5th dimension, beyond that which is known to man.
my napa micro v belt is real tight when i try and use the tensioner. If i unhook the alternator bracket and let the alternator rotate down the belt goes on very easy.

I just put one on the 93. Crank pully catch bolt got me for awhile. That figured out it was still a real tight fit with the idler held hard against the stop. If it's part way on any of the ribbed pulleys, it won't go on the gen.
