Scoring a dually bed for $900

I've been wanting to put a regular bed on my truck for the longest time. I found one at a truck body shop over a year ago. The guy told me it was in like-new condition and that he wanted $1450 for it. I was iffy on the price then and told him I'd call him in another year to see if he still had it. Well, I called this morning and, sure enough, he still had it. This time, his asking price is $900. I drove out to take a look at it to be sure of his like-new definition. Believe it or not, it's in great shape!

I was told that it was taken off the truck when it was new with only 2x,xxx miles on it. It's been inside ever since!

It still has all the lights on it, fenders are NOT cracked and are in great shape as well. I think I stumbled upon a rarity.

Don't forget your cab and chassis rear axle is not as wide a dual wheel pickup axle. Not sure how far in the rear tires will tuck inside the fenders. Plus your wheel base will be different.

Plus tell him to be easy on it when he unstacks and reblocks it. I see he wrecked the bed above putting the wood blocks in a bad place.

I do know that my rear axle is narrower than a standard dually axle by about 5". I have the axle from my parts truck I can use in it's place. I'd like to go through it first and freshen it up with new seals and whatnot before it goes under mine.

Wheelbase is diffierent but eventually the front of the bed will be cut and moved forward, against the cab with a piece from another bed sectioned in to fill the space.

Richie, what do you mean about the bed on top?

the left wheel opening at the rear is creased where the weight of the bed was to much for it ot hold.

Gotcha. I see that now. Believe me, I'm gonna keep a close eye on everything as he's picking it up and putting it on the trailer.

Note that four people can easily lift a bed and set it on a trailer, eliminating any need to risk damage from a fork truck or overhead crane.

Be careful when you move it. Several years ago I bought a new bed on e-bay and had to haul it home on a trailer. The guy who sold it to me cut four 4x4 blocks and we set them under the bolt holes in the bottom of the bed where the bed bolts to the truck frame. We then screwed the blocks to the trailer floor and strapped the bed down tight so the entire bed was supported on the wooden blocks. I drove some 600 miles home on awful roads and the bed suffered no damage. But these beds are simple sheet metal and they damage much more easily than one might imagine.

That's exactly what I plan to do. I have plenty of short lengths of beams I could stand under the bed for support and then strap it down to the trailer.

Whoa Jimbo your going to get rid of your one off flat bed to put on a dually bed? Your bed is so unique. Great find and in such good condition, well worth it. Was your truck a cab and chassis truck?
