Just curious, to Vader and the others on here that seem knowledgeable on these pumps, and mainly what to look for when buying used. I'd like to get a spare pump, for a just in case kind of deal. What is the going rate for a used, high mileage pump, that say, only needs to be resealed and cleaned up. High mileage I would say 250,000 miles. What should I expect to pay?
Didn't mean to hijack your deal Vader, but looking at your find spurred up a question for if I decide to buy one used

From what I'm reading this should work fine? The reason this pump was removed from engine it came off was the guy did a ppump swap.
The lock deal isn't going to work with the pump gear flopping loose in the gear case. You could throw the pump in without the key and the nut finger tight just to line up the gear.

If you do that, you then need to liock the pump to #1 TDC, which will be a couple of millimeters up the cam, so it won't stay there. It's a bench procedure with the pump in a holder and a dial indicator. The advantage of doing all this is that when the pump is installed it will be at factory timing. The timing mark on the pump and case (the scratch, if you will) is invalid when installing a new/different pump.

Third item is it might be risky to turn the engine over with the gear loose in the case. Don't know from experience, just wouldn't do it myself.

If yer low on cash and tools, you could just throw it in wherever it is and see how it runs. At this point, properly timing it is going to take a dial indicator and adapter at the minimum. If you acquire that, or can borrow it. (same setup used on VW engines, BTW) the procedure is relatively easy, either on or off the engine. It's a little tighter with the injector lines installed.

Is there a procedure to follow for setting the pump timing in the FSM? This would definately be the best route i think, after resealing of course. More peace of mind and less trial and error. I plan on doing the pump install with the engine on a stand while Regasketing the entire engine before install. I will have the front case removed for better visibility of pump gear and making sure it's line up correctly. I don't know what others pay for pumps Auguie but i got mine of an engine with 130k that he did a ppump swap on. $250 but I'm regretting being rushed and not noticing all the components missing from the throttle index shaft. I'm having a hard time sourcing what i need.

Seeing as you have more knowledge in this area than i do Mr. Martin, would this be the correct tool for the task at hand?
