"Refresh" Pump rebuild

Has anyone ever rebuilt there pump before a failure occured? I've just been thinking about doing it since my head is off and its basically only pulling 4 bolts and the gear to get it off so its pretty easy. Is this a dumb idea or good idea? The pump has over 187000 miles on it.
Thanks

Parts in the governor mechanism can get sloppy, and if you are planning on going for high RPM the high speed plunger return springs would be a good idea.

On the other hand, I've heard of trucks going twice that far on the original pump.

Hard to say.

The plunger spring are what usually go when the pump goes right? What would be replaced with the governor mechanism? I'd also like the high rpm plunger springs, but whats the Pn#? What else would normally wear out and be a good idea to replace?

Broken plunger springs are common, also the cam ring going flat. Bill or the Pastor might know the p/n on the springs.

A word of caution - I would expect the life of the cam ring to be reduced with the high rpm springs.

I made decent power (337hp/750ftlb) with a 300k mile 93 VE. Don't be afraid of the miles. The pump can be pulled with the head on just as easily with the head off. I wouldn't dig yourself any deeper at this point. Just pull the pump top and R&R the throttle shaft leak for now. Wait until you get a 14mm rotor head to go all the way through the VE.

Breakover spring and throttle guide pin are wear items that could be addressed when you do the t-shaft bushing repair. I don't have pn #'s for the plunger return springs.

I was looking around a little for VE rebuild infobut I didn't find much. Does anyone have a good source for info? Is there such a thing as a rebuild kit? What about checking internal wear and such? Is there some magic that requires professional help to rebuild a pump?

Thanks

Edwin

I really suggest replacing the plunger return springs and also the "cam' plate along with the roller ring.
Your obviously headed into the higher RPM range and those parts were from simple things like poor fuel and other relatively 'normal' wear and tear usage.

Other then changing the plunger springs, and upgrading your governor spring (which can be done yourself), the cost of having a company to "rebuild" your pump will run you between $500-1500 big ones. My '90' VE had more than 250,000 on it before I tweeked. I have seen pumps with more than 350,000 on them and they are still operating fine. Save your money, and buy you some springs and enjoy your rig.

I wouldn't buy those off ebay. I didn't even see the rectangular top cover o-ring/gasket in the picture . Any Bosch shop or Cummins can get you the seal/o-ring/gasket rebuild kit part number is DGK121 ~$15. Doesn't contain any hard parts btw. www.scheiddiesel.com is where I get mine, they ship as well.

Well here is the plunger return springs part# that I have been using. I asked KTA what he uses and he gave me this number. I called and asked my pump guy what number he uses guess what same number.
