Rebuild an nv4500 myself or be a rebuilt one?
Rebuild an nv4500 myself or buy a rebuilt one?
theres a nv4500 thats making noise for sale on craigslist for 600 i was gonna offer 350 and i saw a rebuild kit for 359 with a main shaft. was just wondering if i should just buy a rebuilt one for 1k but i think theres a core charge as welll and i have an auto. saw a thread on a step by step instruction on how to rebuild an nv4500 with all the tools and parts he used. i just didnt know what it would cost a shop to do it if i had the tranny and kit. just trying to find the cheapest way to do a manual swap.
If you have some mechanical ability and some good tools its not hard. If you are lacking either of those then I would find something else. They pop up from time to time, shipping isn't all that bad. Other forum sites seem to have more than around here.
I wouldn't be afraid of running an NV that rattles under load, if that's what the noise is. Mines been doing that since I put it in 60k+ miles ago, unkown miles on it before that...if it shifts decent it's probably ok for a while.
I guess it depends if the right oil has been run in it also, tends to wipe out the synchros first when regular gear oil is run in it.

I've never had a NV4500 apart...but will be redoing mine when I go 4wd conversion. I have plenty of abilty...and some of the right tools...so I hope all goes well.
If you can get it cheap enough I'd grab it just to have as a spare. I kick myself for not grabbing a fresh rebuilt one that sold for $600 locally a year or so ago.
