What needs to be replaced to work with the A-518 or the 47RH transmission?

Besides maybe the TV cable, does the transmission mount and drive shaft have to be replaced or altered?

Can O/D be controlled using pressure switches?
I quit driving mine as soon as I heard a noise that wasn't right. Still took out the OD case. Metal everywhere and many hours cleaning and detailing it and many new parts, but it was rebuildable.

I wonder if your case would be good if you'd have quit when you first noticed something "weird."
I was driving today and out of the hot burning sun the transmission started slipping as I pulled from the stop, the engine would rev and it felt like it was low on fluid.

It did this for about 2 miles until I stopped and picked up some fuel, I checked the transmission fluid and it was fine and did not smell burnt.

So I was going to chance it and go home but was ready to call for a tow truck and when I pulled out of the gas station the truck shifted perfectly all of the way home.

One thing that I do remember though is that for the last few days when I would accelerates hard I would notice a faint shudder while it pulled in first gear but I passed it off as being pinion inclination because I just worked on my rear springs.

I had the transmission serviced and it ran fine, for awhile I guess.

Mine is doing the strange intermittent slipping like it did almost 1 year ago, it will feel like it is low on fluid or a piston is sticking in the valve body and then it will catch and then it will run fine. It will only slip for maybe a second or two and then run normal, I also thought that maybe the selector wasn't in gear.

I changed the filter and the transmission fluid. It seems to have fixed the problem.

My transmission has started slipping again but only when it is cold and only in first gear, after it drives for a few blocks if I am at a stop I can feel idle slow down as the transmission locks up, after that the transmission works fine either until the next day or if it is cold out until it cools down.

It was pretty much doing the same as it was back in June 2009

I dropped the pan and found metal filings, bronze filings and aluminum shavings in the pan, the transmission was already coming apart at this time I was already planning to have the trans rebuilt by REMAC

https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...ht=A-727+trans

The only thing in common between the first and the last time was the shudder when shifting from first into second..

When I had the transmission rebuilt by The Trans Shop back in I think 2003 I had lost 1st gear and the pan was full of metal (ferrous) and I had ballooned my torque converter.

I really do not know.

Latest update...

Well the latest solution was to replace the old A-727 transmission with an overdrive unit from a 1991.5 donor truck that I can still get for $2000.00 but Leo of REMAC called me this morning and he said he called over his machinist that does all of the custom work and showed him, he said "hey that is no problem I can fix that".

He is going to machine out the rear of the case and install a radial thrust bearing in the back of the case and then machine the rear drum to fit so now it will be stronger as the shaft will be supported by the new bearing.

This guy machine billet case for the racing transmissions.

He also showed me some of the parts, the clutches had no friction surface and were burned, they are conical shaped and not flat as they should be.

The separator plate in the valve body looked like some of the check ***** were hammered through the holes??

He said it happens when the trans shift under full throttle from the high pressure in the valve body.

Anyhow it look like i might get my truck back on Monday

Make sure you replace the drum with a good aftermarket one. I have split them before.

Jim, get fuel at a new place recently? Mine did similar when I put "premium" diesel in it on a trip..
I wrote it off as the fuel it was burning..
or perhaps you've had a clogged/weak injector that cleared?

Update on my transmission.

I stopped by REMAC this morning to check on the progress of my transmission and he said everything is here except for the separator plate for the valve body that should get here this afternoon, then he can start putting it together.

Here you can see the separator plate and you can see how the check ***** were getting hammered through the plate from the high pressures.
This Trans Go Shift Kit was installed probably around 2003-4, Ill have to check my records for the exact date.

Here is the bottom side, you can see they were getting pounded through the hole, This must have been affecting the quality of my shifts.

Another almost full view.

Low clutches disk are toasted including the floaters.
See how they are burnt into a conical shape.

Here you can see how some of the plates are not so straight anymore, think I found the reason the truck moves in Park and Neutral as well as the shudder I was feeling.

The clutch drum also got hammered, including a crack on the other side, another part to be replaced.

No that is not my fingerprint..

I cannot believe just how rough the inside and outside of this casting is, I would have deburred and polished the inside if I had the time.

Also an interesting find, our oil cooler they brag about how it needs BIG 1/2" lines, not 3/8" it is too small yet if you check the 1/2" flare fitting on the side of the case, it is only a 1/4" NPT with a tiny 1/4" hole through it.

Maybe they use the 1/2" to lessen the restriction. hum..

Here is where all of the damage was done, there is usually a bronze bushing at the end of the housing that the drum rides on.

The machinist cut out the back of the case and installed a radial thrust bearing to carry all of the thrust loads.

Now I have a roller bearing to carry all of the thrust.

He said I should have my truck tomorrow, I am having cummins withdrawls, I need to go drive behind a bus so I can smell the diesel.

So what do you think?

I'll second NJTman's question:

How is your transmission now?
