Really weird
So yesterday I was on my way to the transmission shop to have them look at the transmission, still driving the same way pulling and shifting real hard so I pull into a parking lot and turned on my video camera, then I pulled back onto the street now the transmission is slipping while trying to get moving, it does get into drive so I went on the the transmission shop in San Dimas CA. after I stopped and rechecked my transmission fluid and drained a little oil from the TV cable (just kidding, yes I know there is no oil in the cable) to have them check it out.
So I get to the shop and ask the owner if he could check out the truck, again he checked the fluids and says it smells a bit burnt but not real bad, but now when we pull out onto the highway it was no longer slipping and back to shifting hard except now the 1-2 shift had a sharp chatter you could feel throughout the truck, 2-3 shift was normal, we got it back to the shop and looking under the hood and while going through the gears I found that when I put it in reverse the truck will have a light shudder at an idle before it stars to move, I also discovered that when I have the truck in park and start the engine it will try to move forward, same with neutral so I figure the reverse shudder is because reverse is being applied with forward at the same time.
So I am going to take it to him on Monday morning so he can rebuild the transmission for me, going to cost about $1275.00 should take about 4 days.
Not really sure what happened yet till he performs an autopsy on the trans but probably something broken that applies the clutches since 1st gear is always engaged.
He is going to build a performance trans, extra clutchs, shift kit.
Does anyone know precisly what stall speed I want on my torque converter with my gear ratio?
What is the stall speed of Suncoast and Goerend converters ?
Even with the muffed up transmission he was impressed with the power of my truck.
Now I have to replace my oil cooler under the bed and about 30' of TOC hose.
This trans started slipping about 6 months ago and I thought I was going to have to rebuild it back then but as quickly as it started slipping, it stopped and I have driven it every day since so the A-727 is pretty hard to kill.

There shouldn't be any fluid in the TV cable.
I use the new synthetic TV fluid.
guvner doesn't turn till the output shaft is turning.
I think maybe you stress tested yer tranny beyond it's limits.
Only clutch in the TQ is the stator clutch. If it slips you'll launch like a 1948 dodge with fluid drive. (yuk). If it's stuck, you'll overheat and be gutless at road speed. Usually if they slip under extreme torque, it feels like you lost the driveshaft only without the clang of metal on the road.
Isn't turbo bark caused by a sudden loss of fuel at high boost?

What torque converter you want depends on what you want your truck to do. Put simplistically, to lose stall speed, you give up gear ratio. If you're powering it hard all the time, low stall speed will run cooler, but launch slower. High stall speed will launch like a catapult, but slip and run hotter with a hard pull.
Goerend is real good about figuring it out for you. He makes the converters for a variety of setups.
Just don't forget to change the TV cable fluid.

I think that when you tear this down you'll find the front clutch pack literally welded together as opposed to all the fiber worn off and not stuck together. I'm interested to hear what tranny guy finds/found.
I guess I could see how you would think that, but at least I know why the transmission took almost 7 gallons to fill it, I must have the 1080p Heavy Duty TV cable in mine.
I am going to take it to my Transmission shop tomorrow and see what they say, but first I am going to check my TV cable and make sure it is full of fluid.
These torqueflites really are strong would you believe I am still driving it, I did not want to leave it at the shop over the weekend if they were not going to work on it and as long as it still runs then Ill use it and save having to borrow or rent a truck or drive my Volvo for a few days.
Other that a few quirks like the ability to drive in park and neutral and back-up while it is still going forewards, it doesn't really drive in park, it just holds against the park pawl for a few inches till you drop it into reverse and then it has to go backwards but once it shifts from first into second and you get through a slight shudder, and after third then (it runs fine I think).
I have still been putting on around 80-100 miles a day since it went out and it it does finally go out I have Auto Club come get me with a rollback and bring me home.
The last time I had to get towed I told the dispatcher I needed a heavy duty wrecker and this guy shows up with a F-350, I said it is not going to work, I am too heavy but he insisted he tried and every time he pulled away from a stop his front end would come off the ground, people driving past probably thought it was part of some clown act.
Anyhow I talked to the mechanic and I am going to bring it in on Tuesday morning and he said I will have it by Friday unless the case is cracked.

To bad you don't have a 518 or 47rh to swap in it. The extra gear is really nice.
Yes I wish I had one to install, I could use the overdrive when cruise the freeways but can I use it with 3.07 gears?

you forgot to change your shifter cable fluid also.....I bet thats why its wanting to move in park and neutral, lol
I could not find any shifter cable fluid when I was at the auto parts but I found a place online and I ordered a 1 pound can of Relative Bearing Grease and I also picked up 2 cans of Prop Wash, always good to have in your tool box.

I cannot wait to find out either, not sure if something broke inside the clutch pack to lock up 1st gear, strange that is still semi functioning, park and neutral are not fully engaged but reverse will creep foreward till you give it throttle then it will shudder and go into reverse but you can feel it is against resistance.
I know he will not take pictures like I would and I sure don't want to bug him but I will get the old parts back and a report of the autopsy.
He is going to add more disc to the pack and was going to get me a list of options he could build, drums, gears.
He kept looking at the engine and truck saying this is sure nice, I can tell you really take care for your truck.
He ask me what are these hoses for, I said they are not hoses, they are cables for my alternator, he just smiled.
I am still amazed at this transmission, my last truck I had blown out 3) 700R4 transmissions, I was driving, it went boom, shook and then didn't move any more.
I finally found a guy that built me a bulletproof 700R4 with a good converter that he guaranteed I would not blow it up.
It was a 1982 C-30 GM 6.2 Banks Turbo and exhaust, turned up Roosamaster pump, reworked injectors.
This puppy would scream.
I totaled the truck, on St Patricks Day 1999 when I was hit by a drunk driver, I stopped him from 60MPH to ZERO in less than 3 feet, yes I was stopped.

To bad someone doesnt have a 2wd od trans they would sell ya for a reasonable price. I could help ya if it was a 4wd truck.
3.07's will work with a od. I was gonna keep mine when I do a trans swap, but towing in the hills sucks sometimes with the 3.07 gears.

They be hard to find fer sure.
Kickin' myself for not grabbing the $300 broken one.
Well I took the truck to the shop this morning to have the transmission rebuilt, he is going to save me all of the parts and I should hear maybe later on today what caused the trans to fail, just put on another 150 miles on it last night.
When I had my last truck 1982 C-30 GM 6.2 All of my 700R4"s had gone out with a shudder and a loud bang and left me dead on the highway.
He is going to add more clutches and reinforced performance parts to the inside and of course a shift kit.
He is also going to replace the rear main seal when he has the transmission out of the truck.
The guy who owns the shop drag races and has automatics on all of his cars, they build racing transmissions also performance for Power Stroke D-Max and Dodge diesels.

Update on my transmission,
I think it is dead..
About 5:30 P.M. tonight I got a call from the owner of REMAC and he said I have some good news and some bad news, said ok I am sitting down, he said I found why your transmission is stuck in foreward, your clutch pack is destroyed, most of the friction surface is gone and the disk are distorted.
Guess it would be easier to list the parts that are burned or broken than what is left.
Needs to be replaced:
* Torque converter, leaking bits of metal into hydraulic circuit.
* Direct Clutch burned,
* Sun Shell bad,
* Front clutches burned,
* Case cracked and badly worn, rear bushing went through case.
metal from torque converter caused bronze bushings to wear on output shaft that caused rear thrust bearing to wear through the back of the case.
But second gear is still good.
He said he is already looking for another case for me and as soon at he gets one it will start going back together.
He said it probably is all caused from the torque converter coming apart.
And still with all that was wrong, I was still able to drive it.
So Weird.

I quit driving mine as soon as I heard a noise that wasn't right. Still took out the OD case. Metal everywhere and many hours cleaning and detailing it and many new parts, but it was rebuildable.
I wonder if your case would be good if you'd have quit when you first noticed something "weird."
