REALLY dumb turbo ?

As much as I know bout these engines, turbo housings are a loss to me. My 1991.5 should have the "lagmaster" 21 housing. My cousin GAVE me a turbo off an early 2nd gen that he said was shot. I think it has the 12 w/g housing on it. With my 5-speed and 4.10 gears, this housing should really scream right? Never dealt with a w/g before, and even if the turbo is crap, the 12 housing should still be OK, right?? Not new to diesels AT all, just new to changing housing sizes. Any thoughts... I tow sum, but mostly light (4000 lb boats). I can hit 1200 floored (rare) on my EGT (pump mods, probe where it should be)...

It might be a little on the small side for towing, but you'll probably love it for normal day to day driving. You can always dial back the full power screw when you tow if you're worried about it. With your 5-speed and 4.10 gears it might work just fine as-is.

I'm not sure what it would cost to rebuild an HX-35, probably somewhere around $200?

Would it be worth the $ to rebuild the hx, or would I be better all around just gettin a 16 housing? I f so, that hx and 12 (I think??) would just be layin in my garage. I love my truck bein able to tow a house, so I dont wana take that away from it, but with the 21, I bet it could be more fun. All signs point to the 16 bein all around and a BIG improvement over my 21, but since I got a 12 for free???
But I got no clue bout the w/g stuff

I'd go with a 16cm over a 12cm. A 12cm housing at 30psi boost has about 70psi back pressure. Not good.

You'll need a bigger turbo than an HX35 or H1C before you have enough fuel to worry about a wastegate.

What year is the 2nd Gen? Is it a 12 Valve? '94 and some '95's have a WH1C and the rest of the 12 Valves have HX35's. They are basically the same turbo, so don't worry about the different names.

You might try selling your H1C to get enough money to buy a 16cm housing for the 2nd Gen turbo.

If you have stock injectors then the 12 housing will be fine. I saw no difference between my ported 12 with the WG closed(didn't have it hooked up) and the 16 housing. EGT's spool and manifold pressure where the same. Wouldn't waste any money on the 16 housing. If you can get the 12 for cheap or free use it and save money for a real turbo.

12 cm is great housing. hi egts are not from "resriction" in
12 housing but overspooling the turbo out of its efficiency map. i tow w/a 12 and even a 9cm housing {he-351} and ran even cooler. hx-35 is easy to rebuild as long as compressor blades havent hit sides of comp. housing. get a holset kit off ebay for $50 and do it.

Yeah i think that 12cm housing would be fine, I'd rebuild it and try it and if you don't like it, then sell it and get a 16cm housing for your h1c.

Thanks for the help guys. Will that 12 from the 2nd gen fit on my stock turbo? I just wana change the housing so I get a bit faster spool up. And if so, do I need to hook up the w/g?
If not, looks like I'm guna have to spend the coin for a 16, which I feel would be better all around for me. Thanks again, Jeff

How early a turbo? 94's had WH1C's. Basically between HX-35 and a H1C

I ALWAYS recommend the 12 cm wastegated for a 5 speed intercooled truck with stock injectors. It is a very fun setup and EGT is rarely a problem.

You are going to want a compressor with MWE slots though. If you don't the surging will make you go nuts. If the turbo you were give is rebuildable, do that and swap it on. Otherwise, get a 60 mm compressor kit for your H1C.

The wastegate needs a source of boost. I like to get it from the manifold so boost pressure does not change with ambient temperature.
