Ram Diesel Noob
Ram Diesel Noob
First off, this forum is the best Dodge Diesel forum that's I've run across.
I'm beginning the search for a dodge 12V and had a few questions. I searched the FAQ section and didn't see the answer but feel free to direct me there if I can find it there.
-Any drivetrain differences between the 150, 250, and 350 (transmission, gearing, etc)?
-Are the 89-93's mechanically the same?
-How do the 1st gens differ from the 12V 2nd gens?
I plan to use it primarily as an occassional tow rig, not a drag race machine. I am leaning towards a five speed to avoid the costly endeavor of rebuilding the AT if it were to go. I plan to make a few minor power mods, but nothing radical. Am I looking in the right direction?
Again, great site!

150's were not available with the Cummins and had weaker trans and axle options. 250 and 350 series drivetrains are the same, the same options were available for both series.
'89 - early '91 trucks were non-intercooled and the auto trans did not have overdrive, 3.07 gears were used on all auto trucks so top speed would be acceptable. '91.5 -'93 trucks were intercooled and the auto trans has an overdrive.
In just about every way. They are totally different trucks. About the only thing that's the same is the long block assembly. Completely different fuel systems and drivetrain between 1st and 2nd gen trucks.

Thanks for the quick reply. Good info.
Is there anything else I should look for with the transmission? Are all the autos the same or were there factory options for different tranny's?
Again sorry for all the noob questions, I'm just trying to educate myself before taking the plunge.

727 torquflite auto with little work is nearly bulletproof and cheaper to do than a o/d trans...however no O/D means lower fuel mileage and highway drone in cab if straight piped
(( .....fun to drive a beefed up auto truck on the road with engine mods though

Thanks for the replies. I'll be sure to check back in once I find one. I"m in central Illinois so feel free to pass on any leads on a clean 5 speed. I'm not set on a 4X4 but that's what I would be replacing.
Thanks again
