pump timing

to bump the timing on my injection pump do i loosen the 3 nuts holding the pump on the timing cover, and twist the whole pump 1.8 toward the motor? and how do you get to the one nut under the pump, it seam very tight back there, and the one between the pump and the head.

just delt with this the other day you need a 13mm s-wrench or since i couldn't find one of those anywhere i found some super cheap creasent shaped box wrenchs at kragen. as for the one btw the pump and engine you just need a long extensions to get that one.

Don't forget the bolt that goes into the power steering bracket. Also remove the banjo bolt from the AFC housing.

I got to the lower bolt wit a 3/8 drive 13mm crows foot and 4" worth of extentions. Definate pain in the ..... hind quarters but even though it was my first time doing it only took 45 min.

I did a 1/8 bump a few days ago. About the only thing I noticed was a drop in EGT and what seems like increased valvetrain noise. Don't know what a Chevy 6.2 sounds like. This is a recall pump that did not appear to be indexed with any mark to the timing case. It appeared to be sitting near the center of the adjustment travel and I marked it before moving it. Is it normal to hear more noise or you think maybe it was already advanced far enough and I went too far? What is the risk of running too much timing?

An increase in noise is normal. If it rattles like an old 6.9, 6.2, or Mercedes, you went too far. The only true way to tell is to get a gauge and check it. I've seen the 1/8" bump take one up to !2.0mm; others takes it to 1.6mm.

That's kinda what I fgured, but I'm a little gunshy about anyting with this truck I'm not sure about. Since it's my first diesel that includes most things with the engine. It just went over 70k on the odometer last week so it's probably due for a valve adjustment anyway. I'm gonna go ahead and check the valve lash just to put my mind at ease and drive on....
