pump question

Im still kinda boggled. I set the fuel pin to the richest setting and backed off on the smoke screw, it was flush with the cover and too much smoke on take off, It gained some power, not lots. I pull my daily 7% grade going home and now it will do 70 in O/D WOT,18 psi boost. it used to do only 64 mph,16 psi boost. It still has no visible smoke except right off the take off for a second. I put it into 3rd today for a test and it will not excede 60 mph WOT 12 psi boost. With 3.54 and stock tires at 31" tall it should put me at 2200 RPM. it feels like its run out of steam. where does the gov or defueling kick in? what to adjust next for more huevos.
93,350,4x4,auto, dually. straight exhaust, mods to air intake. I have found some is not enough, now I want more.

How about checking for full throttle at the pump with the pedal on the floor? Or, unscrew the high idle speed screw a few turns. Mine poops out at around 2850-2900 with the stock spring. No expert here, just past experience! Jim

I meant to this evening but got tied up before I got to it. I was eyeballing it though and had a question, for lack of a better explanation there is two plates that get turned when throttled. they are spring loaded, The high idle screw woiuld let the 1 plate move but still be subject to spring pressureand will stop before the other with the linkage to it. Is this a safety of sorts to prevent damage to the pump being cranked wide open and thensome?

The engine speed gov should be about 2500 RPM from the factory.

I think that is called a breakaway spring- it keeps your right foot from actually bottoming out the pump internally, sort of a safety device. Like having a throttle stop for a little slack in your gasser's linkage or cable so when you mash the pedal you don't break the throttle shaft off the side of the carb. We all get a little excited at times jim

Okay -- If I understand your post correctly the engine is governig out on the hill at about 60 mph.

Based on some data that was posted on here, I calculated the sppedo calibration for our trucks to be 658 revs per mile. So 60 on the speedo would be about 2300 rpm. (When I looked up rev/mile data for 235-85R16's, I found most of them to be more like 688 rev/mile, however, so our speedos read a little high)

You should be able to make it up to just about 65 in direct, depending on how much your tranny is slipping. With no slippage, 65 on the speedo should be about 2500 rpm. I would probably try to adjust the max speed on the governor so the truck would hit 65 on the hill and leave it at that . . . but you could probably crank up the speed higher if you wanted to. You are not quite as low as you think, though.

As long as the breakover spring comes off the stop when you have the pedal to the floor, all you have to adjust is the max speed setting on the pump and you should be good to go.

Good luck with her!

Alec

Thank You Asilitch and others. I will invest in a tach I think for the hey of it. After I got home I measured the tires and found them a little shorter than what that size is according to the charts. Plus if you really factor in the static loaded height it really shrinks. I run them at 45 psi unloaded for a softer ride. So it is true my RPMs are higher that thought. Ive been playing with the pump settings and will up the max throttle pull a little. its become a game for me trying to get this 350 to run like my 250. Granted the 350 is a 1 ton 4x4 but its like driving a heavy sled compared to the crisp and light feeling 250.

The throttle cable is a big issue for our trucks. They take a stretche like the springs. My most noticeable gain was after adjusting the linkage for full travel, and taking the excess slop out at the pedal.
