Pump leak advice

Just to clear, I am an idiot when it comes diesels. A while back, I asked about a little more power just to get me down the road. There were some great suggestions and a couple were nice enough to offer help. Last few days, I discovered fuel leak around the pump. I can't even begin to describe it. I think its the front portion, the part facing the front of the truck. It drips a few drops every few minutes. Some times its a lot more, sometime none. I had to find a diesel mechanic to get it fix as it was parked over at the job site, or my client's home. They were nice to allow me to do that. I found one today, he quoted me at least 2500 dollars (will call tomorrow with actual pricing due the the unknown cost of a rebuilt pump). Still I must pay for him to "Check it out". this includes a valve adjustment. i think I need it, because I have had the truck wince 25000 miles and have not done a thing to it. Its a 93 and now has 110,000 miles on it. I guess its time to pay the piper? I just walked into the house and have not had a chance to look or search. On a rebuilt pump, it will be calibrated to stock, so he will charge me to do the pump up in HP and wil have to pay more. Is this correct. I see 3K coming. Maybe its time to buy another work truck. Any advices on this stupid pump or is there a fix instead of a rebuild? Thanks for the long winded BS

Jeff,
These trucks really are not that difficult to work on,
Getting more power from any VE pump only requires replacing the under $20.00 governor spring, turning in the fuel screw $ free, rotating the AFC diaphragm $ free and bumping the timing, doing this anyway while it is being installed.
Adjusting the valves on a 12-V at the most will cost you 6 valve cover gaskets and 6 o-rings and maybe 20 minuets even if you do it wrong as long as the rocker is up you can adjust it.
Best bet is to get yourself an FSM
Average rebuilt and sealed pump should be between $600.00 to $800.00, plus wouldn't think no more than 4 hours labor to R&R it.
I can have my injection pump out easly within 30 minuets once I set out all of my tools

Also I have found out here in Southern California that most auto mechanics have no idea how to work on a Cummins diesel

Thanks Jim. I really have no idea what the heck I am doing. I am very afraid to tear into the pump only because I don't know how they work. I am in Los Angeles. Where in SoCal are you? This shop seems to be a diesel shop. He had a bunch of larger commercial trucks in his lot. A couple of dump trucks and a bunch of RVs in there. he not hurting for work that's for sure. this place is in Costa Meas just right outside of Newport.

I had just done some searching and found out that my year truck may have a recall on the pump. Now I must call him and find out tomorrow and see if he can read the tag on the side of the pump.

Jeff,
I am off I-10 and Hwy-39 about 20 minuets away.
The best place for parts I have found is ADP-BECS off the I-605 and Peck Rd they sell and repair fuel injection and turbochargers.
The first few times can be intimidating if you have never done it before.
Almost all repairs on this pump unless something is broken revolves around an inexpensive Bosch overhaul kit.

Thanks for the heads up Bobva. Looks like I have to have the mechanic deal with it. The truck is needed to finish my job. I still have not heard from them yet. They are suppose to give me a quote after spending a little time with it. His advice was to have a rebuilt pump. He didn't think he can overhaul it and it had to be sent out to a specialist to do the pump. he think it might be a cheap fix, so we will see.

W Covina? I am right off the old Pasadena Fwy. Since you are local, do you have a shop you recommend or do you do any work on these trucks on your own since you are a diesel mechanic? The fuel leak was discovered while at work down in OC, so I tow it to the nearest place I can find that was willing to work on these trucks. I hate being in these situations. I don't know if I am getting rape or not.

What are the signs of a broken pump? Its never fail to run or start. No shaking upon start up. Nothing that I can tell. It has 110,000 miles on it. I have had it since 20k on the odo. Thanks Jim.
