Pulling the head
Pulling the head
Does any of the rocker assembly have to come off to pull the head?
I already got most the work done on pulling it and I only have about 2 hours into it and working by myself.
Thanks

You should pull the injectors, if you haven't already. The tips can be fairly easy to damage huffing that big chunk 'o cast iron around. Tell ya the truth, I'm not sure if the rockers have to come off. I doubt it unless they're somehow headbolts as well.
You need to pull the rockers off so you can pull the push rods out. if you dont pull the push rods they may get bent if you hit them with the head. And I would'nt trust the small rocker arm bolts to hold the 60# valve springs by themselves. In other words, pulling them saves a lot of time.
Ok sounds like im pulling the rockers. thanks guys
The head would have been off tonight but I wasn't able to work on it much. The head is almost ready to come off only have the head bolts left and I guess the rockers. I hope its good news when I lift it

You can either remove the pedestals with the rocker arms attached, or remove each rocker arm seperately, after backing off each lash adjuster. Much easier to just remove the pedestals.
Well I worked on it for about 45mins and finished pulling the head. Not sure If anyone wants pics but I haven't taken any yet. I was a little scared to see the condition of the cylinders but all is well. The cross hatches are still all there and all the pistons are still shinny (when you rub the carbon off
). It looks like it blew the oil passage that goes to the #6 cylinder rockers.
Now I gotta decide what brand of studs to buy, try and find a good machine shop around here to test the head for cracks, machine it, o-ring it, and then possibly port and polish (if I can afford it). While its all apart im gonna put the 60lb valve springs in.
I don't know what gasket would be the best to use with the o-rings, stock, .010, or .020? any suggestions? Also what are some things to do while the head is off? Im think i'll probably take the injection pump top off again since its so easy to get at plus the throttle shaft is leaking a bit. I'll prob replace the o-ring on the ps pump as well. Any other suggestions are things that are good to do while its off?

I wish I coulda rubbed the carbon off mine
. Mine were SMOKED
. Use the .020 HG with or without an o-ringed cylinder head.
On the studs, I prefer Haisley Machine studs. They did all the R&D on them in the beginning, ARP just followed after seeing the huge demand in the diesel business. www.scheiddiesel.com or www.haisleymachine.com. Haisley's sites shows fire rings. $120 for 60# valve springs.
I have pretty much all the part numbers for the needed gaskets for a HG job. Let me know if you'd like them. You might consider a $400 ATS 3 pc manifold too. Thats about the only other thing I did to mine while the head was off.

Is there any negitives to getting a .020 gasket?
I just might take you up on that offer for the part numbers Bill.
I'd like to get a ats manifold but I don't think the budget will allow it right now, I don't think its a big deal to change it anyway so I'll just get it when I can.
Is cummins decent for the 60# springs? I usually get my parts from Piers but since im already gonna be getting the gasket from cummins and if there price is around the same as Piers i'll get them from them.

Cummins HG kit, comes with stock thickness HG- 4089649. Or you can piece one together if you've replaced certain items recently. I did this, so I don't have all the part numbers, but one could search for them.
Exhaust manifold gasket x6 3927154. Valve cover gaskets x6 3930906. Valve cover o-ring/seal x6 3910824. Grid heater gasket x2 3969988- heat resistant type. Intake cover plate gasket x1 3938152. Turbo oil drain gasket x1 3937706. Thermostat and gasket x1 3802968.
Other items if need be, but no part numbers, turbo to exhaust manifold gasket x1. Rubber square cut injector o-rings x6. Copper fuel drain washers x6. Banjo bolt sealing washers x4. Fuel heater o-ring x1. Valve seals x12.
From what I understand the Cummins HG kit has extras you won't use, but a few items not included??? A buddy of mine just bought the kit, but had to go back for a few extras not included. Depending on what you plan to reuse, you could get by without the kit.
