Puff of smoke

I haven't seen this discussed here. When I first start my engine I get a puff of black smoke, is that just a momentary rich mixture from fueling while turning the engine over or do my injectors leak after shutdown, or is it soot from my last shutdown?? I noticed when I tried setting the timing up it got worse? I assume everyones truck does this...or not? Its kind of embarrasing when someone is standing near the exhaust when I start it in a parking lot or gas station.

Re:Puff of smoke

It is normal to get a puff of smoke upon start up. The VE pumps on the first gen's do this. The VE pump starts the engine at full throttle untill it gets to idle speed.

So, the 2nd Gen Cummins don't start off in the full fuel position? I was under the impression that all mecanically goverened diesel did.

Re:Puff of smoke

All diesels I have ever seen puff on start up... don't have any experience with 3rd gens, but my grandpa's truck (a 96) puffs too, and that's the p7100 pump.

Re:Puff of smoke

Most all Diesels start at WOT untill RPM picks up to where the governer is set.

The 24V's start WOT untill idle RPM is achieved. My P-7100 12V has a hard time starting becuase of the screwy governer springs in it. A light tap on the throttle, and she lights off with a flick of the starter. The '03's also start with the ECM telling the injectors to throw lots of fuel.

The puff of smoke is perfectly normal. It is "rich" or overfueled for just a moment, and that's why you see the puff.

Re:Puff of smoke

IT is also my understanding that Diesel normally start in a more advanced state of injection than what they normally run at. Opposite of what a spark ingnited engine does.

I'm glad to know that, I've wondered the same thing since I got my 1st Gen several years ago. Seems like it's puffing a little heavier now.
