Propane Injection is on!

Allright, after a week and a half of monitoring my egt's and trying to get them past 800 degrees(average 625-700 degrees @ 98 degrees ambient temps runnin' @ 75 - 80 mph. These readings are pre-turbo @ the exhaust manifold) I'm convinced that my set up will always run cooler than average because of the 9cm/ HX 35 tubo assembly. I installed the ATS Torque-Pro 2000 propane injection kit this last weekend and here are the results: I pre-set the Hobbs pressure switch(uses boost pressure as the on/off to open up the lock-off valve which releases the pane into the inlet side of the turbo) @ 7 psi, which is about cruising boost for me with my 1 hour commute. At level cruising, I'm runnin' @ 70 mph. It doesn't take long for it to go 80+ mph with the pane on...gotta watch that. Truck drives so much smoother... doen't seem like it is struggling to go up the hills when I punch it. EGT's went up maybe another 75 degrees, so now my average is a solid 700 degrees while cruising. Still experimenting, so I haven't got it at WOT yet. It is a lot more quicker from a dead stop, for sure. Throttle response is right now! I am going to be a good boy and not increase the propane inlet orrifice size as others have done....this is where power can get seriously addicting/dangerous. If all goes well with this mod, I'll be very happy with it. Bring on the freeway on ramps!! Carmyne

Have you turned your pump up at all? I can't believe your temps with that small housing!! I can run 900 deg post turbo easy with a 12cm housing!

I can't believe these number are correct for the "pre turbo" EGT's.
They just seem too low to me, BUT I could be wrong, it happened

I'm glad it's working well for you, Carmyne. Don't go playing with the pump timing, either. That's a big no-no when running propane.

I still think you ought to try a different pyro probe, your temps sound way too low for a truck with aftermarket injectors.

Yup, I know the EGT's sound oh so lowwwww, so here's what I did. I called the diesel mechanic/owner of the shop I got this used turbo from and he agreed that an Autometer guage is a very accurate guage and the reason my readings were so understandibly low was because that turbo is rated at 235+ HP and my '93 is at 160 stock. Sure, the BD 40HP injectors probably upped that a bit, but I've got asome extra (knock on woody) leeway as far as EGT's. I told him that I can go WOT and get the boost up to 30psi for only a second and steady at 18-22psi all day. That boost power is allowing me to get alot of "ummph" with not so much of the accompanying heat that goes along with high boost numbers. Checked with another shop and they agreed. These 2 shops here in Sacramento are "Top Notch", and are owned by previous big rig mechanics who went to the "other side" to specialize in performance. Carmyne

Oh yeah, to answer your question, APWATSON50, no, I have not tweeked the pump or the timing, and with the propane addition, I don't plan on it. Carmyne

I would try a different probe. The HY-35 runs pretty toasty on a stock '01 truck. If you were seeing 1100 I might believe it, but if 800 is as hot as it reads there is something wrong.

I had trouble getting into high 900's when it was stock, since the 275's it hits high 1100's but mainly due to a nasty dirty air filter. At the dyno day up here, my X-monitor shows 1201 as a max, it wasn't me so it had to be during the dyno pull A SII is on order.

All right, day two of the pane. Because of all your concerns, I re-checked my EGT readings. Yes, I actually got 'er up to 975-1000 degrees as I floored it into the freeway on ramp yesterday afternoon(98 degs. ambient). This morning(65 degs. ambient) there is a stretch of uphill grade that I come up on as soon as I enter the freeway. I floored it, shot my boost up to 25psi and held it. EGT's shot up to 900 and held till I got to the crest of the hill. On my 1 hour commute (level) that is where I have trouble getting the EGT's past 700. going 75mph Sure, if I floor it and cruise at 80mph my EGT's get up to 750....I mean I not only have to work at getting it to 800 degrees(remember, level freeway driving) I chance on havin' Chippy pull me over..."but officer, I'm conducting an experiment with my EGT's for my friends on DTR......" Well, do my readings now all meet your approvals? Carmyne
