Power steering pump foaming up/no assist
Hi guys....I thought I would check in here first before I spring for a new pump.
My power steering is not assisting on my 1992 W250..... (Cummns of course)
the truck has 302,000 miles trouble free up until this point...(darn thing....you'd think they would last longer!)
anyways... I checked the fluid figuring it would be low and it was all foamy. I use my suction gun and pulled out all I could and put in fesh new PS fluid. No good...still the same thing.
At first it got better as the truck warmed up and I got going down the road, but now ....nah.
I am thinking I need a new pump.
anything else to check???
Thanks for the help guys!
D.

You could have run out of fluid w/ a leak or perhaps an air leak on the suction side. Anyway, once they get air, it's a bear to get the air out.
Jack the front end up. Slowly turn it all the way left, keeping an eye on fluid, don't let it run out. Then turn right slow, again keeping the fluid from running out.
Keep going left to right with the front end off the ground. This should get the air out.

Mine did the same thing. Gear box was bad. With it jacked up someone could turn the wheel and the cap on the end (end facing the bumper) would pop in and out. Replaced the box and problem solved. If u do remove the box carefully inspect the mounting plate and frame for cracks.

I never ever had run out of fluid though....
So I guess that leaves a suction-side leak....
No telling where that leak would be...

go figure.
I need to have an assistant move it for me as I do want to inspect it anyways.
I had a 93 that had a busted frame. It was broke all the way through and all around, the split went right through one of the gearbox mounting holes.
I wire welded it up and sold the truck within a month.
Does anyone have a pattern for the steering stabilizer brace?
I want to make one for my 97 and 92.... preventative measures.....
