You should use true Power Steering fluid. Our PS pumps cook ATF. Been there, done that.

I finally had to flush the whole PS system to get the ATF out of it, then replaced it with Power Steering Fluid.

this is why I asked, ford ps pump will run on atf for ever. So what brand and type should I use (ie ford ps pump uses type F? I rather buy from a local store like advance or autozone or napa.

Thank You.

My steering box has a leak... I put diff brands PS fluid in it, but when i switched to ATF everything changed. First, the leak slowed down and the steering started working better than it has in years.

I'm one of those guys that changes the PS fluid when i do oil changes... Not any more... I just add ATF and ignore the leak... lol

I wouldnt go to cheap with it. Id hate to add cheap fluid that fails while Im going down the road and lose my PS and brakes. That wouldnt be good.

Thats just my .02¢

I have used tractor hydraulic fluid in them for years with excellent results.

I get it in five-gallon buckets.

The local saw-mill has numerous trucks, plus all the various lifts, loaders, pick-ups, tractors, skidders, and the like; they keep a 55-gallon drum of non-detergent 10-wt oil and use it in the power-steering.

I don't know this as fact, but I have always suspected power-steering fluid was plain old hydraulic fluid in a different bottle.
