Power Steering Box

I just noticed the seal at the input shaft is leaking. Do these pumps blow seals alot? I replaced the last one with a scrap yard box because it leaked also. That one was coming out of the top somehow. This ones only been on for a while now and leaking already.

Is this hard to replace? I just looked at the manual, but it really only shows ripping it all apart.

If I decide to tackle it, anyone know where to get the seals? Dealer only?

I'm gonna try it soon, I just got my new sterring shaft, so might as well kill two birds with one stone.

You can get the parts at NAPA and I'm sure other major parts stores. I have done them before with mixed results.

tight to the right

Well, the cold temps are among us and it's started again.
As soon as the temps drop for winter, my steering box is hard to steer to the right in the morning for about the first minute or two.
After about two or three turns to the right, it's stiff and then ok for the day. It's ok to the left but hard to the right.
Anyone ever experience this?

Before you change the seal go to NAPA and buy some lucas power steering leak stop. The stuff is thick as snot and has stopped several leaks for me in the past.

The first thing I would do is change the power steering fluid.

Rebuilt box is only about $200 at NAPA. Mine just recently started leaking too, but I figured it has a right, being about 260k miles old. As soon as I scrape up the dough, I'm going to replace the box, the shaft and the drag link.

You can get your box rebuilt and upgraded by PSC for about the same price (shipping both ways included), and MUCH better quality, IMO, than a parts store rebuild (I wore one out in 2 years on a 2wd highway rig).

www.pscpowersteer.com They have a phone number listed on the top of their home page. They dont have a price listed for rebuilds, but I called them and they do it.

Mine just started to, i tried the Lucas with no help. I just bought the seal kit from Napa but haven't had a chance to change it out yet, but keep going back and forth with just fixing it or getting a reman for it since it has over 200K and i just went through the front end (drag link, kingpins/bushings, wheel bearings, tierodends), thats when the leak started.

Mine doesn't leak yet but it has the same lower shaft side to side wobble that my 2nd gen. had. Does anyone make a DSS for the 1st gen.? Mine still has all original steering component, ball joints and steering arms, but has gone through a few steering boxes.

Not to be a cheerleader, but the upgrades in the PSC box address the side to side slack you describe.

I was just looking at mine ya it is wet . So I called up NAPA, they said life time warranty. So I said what does that mean. He says as long as I own the vehicle it is guaranteed. If it goes bad they give me a knew one. I think I will want to look into the NAPA box.
