Unhappy POT problems...

ive decided to put a potentiometer in to prplace my tps.
what wires from the plug doi put where?
I was under the impression that the two terminals that change cant be ground.
what i did was take a 4 strand wire and just use 3 of them- the black(ground) and then the red and white. i connected the white to the whitish colored wire at the plug. The red one replaced the orange/blue and the black went to black for ground. is this right? i followed the writeup by tuckerdee step by step. i dont know what i did wrong.
somebody please help... =[
EDIT- if i turn the POT too far to the left (turning the voltage down) too far, the speedo goes out and i noticed that the O/D off button does too. But it does NOT mess with the radio.
thanks in advance...
ive checked voltages on everything i can think of. so im just stumped.
