ported exhaust housings?

does anyone have any pictures of a professionally ported exhaust housing?

i want to see what places like pdr or gds,ect. do for porting vs. what we can do with a die grinder

I dont have any pictures, but the general rule of thumb is to take it out as far as you can while still maintaining the integrity of the housing, then smooth stuff out. You want to get smooth flow, and a wider opening on the housing than the manifold it's coming from. Confused yet?

So, you're really just gasket matching it to the exhaust manifold?

pretty much just gasket matching. It frees up some restriction from the uneven surfaces. If its done right you get a little quicker spool and a little lower EGT. Not a huge difference but worth it if you plan to make a good bit of power where every drop in EGT is needed.

ACtually, what I read on the TDR a few years back said to make the piece it's going into a little larger than the piece it's coming out from- helps create a venturi effect, basically "sucking" the gasses from one piece to the next. In other words, your manifold ports coming off the head need to be bigger than the head outlets. Same for the manifold to turbo mounting. I've had good success in the past. I ported a 18cm housing and a manifold, and it spooled real closely to a 14cm non ported housing/ manifold combo. I think there is more to be gained in flow and efficiency with the smaller housings than with the larger ones. I draw an outline of the gasket on the turbine housing and cut it to match, then smooth the flow radii. Same on the manifold.

i gasket matched my 12cm wg housing the same way,as stated above but thats why i was woundering what the places that have lots of money in equipment do.
if they do it the same, why spend the money?

I just got done porting mine. Basically, I gasket matched it and took out a couple humps inside the ports about 2" or so, mostly on the front port (see circled areas in second picture.

I also cleaned it up good and painted it with POR-15 Manifold Gray paint. I've used that point on gasser exhaust manifolds and even after a few years they still look as good as the day I painted them.

Here's the pics ;
