Poly bushings help!!!

I need to order one pair for 5/8" bolt diam, x 1" leaf spring hole diam - front leaf spring poly bushings, for my 93 W250. This is for the front leaf bushings, right after the front bumper. The leaf spring bushing kit I received from Energy Suspension, is for 1/2" bolt holes for all 4 bushings. This won't work as the front hangers are for a 5/8" hole. The ***** at ES can't seem to find a bushing which will work here? Anyone know if a Dart etc, came with a 1" hole size with a 5/8" bolt? TIA!

Im curious if they make something that dimension? With a 5/8 hole, it would only leave you with a 3/16 wall to bear the weight of the truck...

Mike,
The original front leaf bolts are 5/8". If I installed the 1/2" bolt hole 1" leaf diam bushings, seems like there would be alot of slop there. I bet those 5/8" front hangers would wear out quick? I might just drill out the 1/2" poly bushings to 5/8." Then just run a 5/8" bolt without a sleeve (where the bolt goes through). I know drilling bushings is a no no, but I can't wait any longer to get the leafs on.

Broncobilly,

This has been an ongoing PITA. You won't find such a bushing with a 5/8" ID and 1" OD. I had my local spring guy search his books and nearly tear apart his shelf of backstock. Some guys leave out the steel sleeve. Taking out material from the bushing to accomodate a 5/8 bolt is not good. I had my front spring eyes re-rolled for the large 5/8" bushing. If you did decide to run the 1/2" bolts with respective bushings, you would need to put a steel plate over your existing holes and redrill them to 1/2". Don't use mild steel for a plate either, the weight will wear it out in no time. Try a search and you'll see quite a few of us have dealt with this issue in different ways. Good luck and what ever way you decide, make it safe and solid.

Aloha,
Matt

Matt,
Thanks for the input! Someone on the web told my that Prothane makes a bushing, which is 1" OD with a 5/8" ID bolt hole. It's suppose to be a leaf spring bushing for a jeep YJ, late 80's. The part # is 1-1005. Don't take this as gospel, as I cannot confirm if this info is correct? I am looking around on the web now, and trying to see if I can get dimensions on that part #. I will probably just email Prothane. I think it's odd that Daystar, Energy Suspension etc, all sell 1/2" ID hole bushings for the 3/4 - 1 ton 1st gen's. You think they would have a 5/8" ID hole application? I was thinking of using the 1/2" ID bolt hole bushings, and shimming the outside (near the 5/8" frame hanger), with grade 8 washers. If I had a lathe, I would turn some spacers to fit over the 1/2" bolts. A better option would be to weld up the hole (like you mentioned), and drill for a 1/2" bolt. Unfortunately, I only have a stick welder now - and stink with it
Another problem I am having, is locating a poly bushing - for where the rear shackle (top) connects to the frame. I just ordered new shackles from Dodge, and will probably just use the oem rubber bushings - If they are included????? If anyone knows where to get these frame shackle poly bushings, I would appreciate the info. Maybe a Ramcharger???

Billy,

Is this a typical bushing? I mean, a lot of manufacturers have that dimensions for bushings. The 1/2" bolts use that exact bushing. You slip the steel sleeve in the 5/8" ID, hence the 1/2" hole. I was just wondering about that...

Matt,
You're absolutely correct! When you omit the steel sleeve, the ID hole on a 1" od bushing is 5/8." Boy, I feel dumb I didn't spot that Sooooo, I guess I could run the 1" od leaf spring bushings I have, and omit the steel sleeve. Running the 5/8" gr 8 bolt right through the bushing. Anyone here done this? I don't think omitting the sleeve will do anything with a Poly bushing? I searched the web on that 1005 part number I mentioned. It appears to be for a YJ Jeep, which has 1 1/2" OD bushings. So, the bushings would be to big. Matt, thanks for your input! Now I can go put those front bushings in

I ordered poly frame shackle bushings from Summit, but I have not installed them yet. Here is the Summit P/N:

SJA-SE14D SHACKLE BUSHING KIT

They were approx. $22.00 for the set.

Dawg,
I received my Skyjacker shackle frame bushings the other day (thanks again for the Summit part #). I worked on my 93 today. I tried knocking out the old bushing shells, with a steel punch and 4 lb drill hammer. No dice! Since the bushings are 1" OD, I would suggest drilling out the shells with a 1" HSS (high speed steel) drill bit. You will need to rent a 1/2" (chuck size) angle drill, unless you own one? I chucked up a 1" HSS bit in my 1/2" regular Milwaukee drill, and the truck body interferes (sp) with the angle of the drill bit. I will probably rent an angle drill from Homie Depot next week. HTH!
