Exclamation Piston Lift Pump Question

The stock lift pump died yesterday and im going to buy a piston pump. Do you guys have a part # i could have for the pump and what else do i need to do the converstion, i read the sticky about how to install it, but i was confused if i use the stock fuel supply lines. i know i need a spacer and 2 gaskets as well.

BTW, if the lift pump goes out, is it similar to the vp44 where it wrecks the Injection Pump??? simply put, should i be worried about my VE dieing, it was new last july.

The VE will draw it own fuel somewhat. Just get a working LP on there ASAP you'll be OK.

well it dies at an idle and it runs but it takes forever to start, however if i hold my foot there it runs fine, except at WOT, there is no air leaks and the IP has 6000 miles on it, they also replaced the cam return springs so im thinking those are not broke, last thing i could think of is the 17 year old lift pump. and i figure ill never have to do it again if i put a piston pump on. i have a nissan so i have something to drive. have time and money so im set but i need some #'s from you guys so i can order parts.

if you read though that thread ^^^ (got to go into the sticky and view the original) there are updated part numbers. your fuel lines will hook up just fine.

got all the parts ordered from cummins northwest, i was having trouble finding what year the low preasure piston pump was put on, well i was for an ISB engine not the dodge version, got everything set straight though, total came to $186.00 including tax and shipping. got the spacer, pump, 2 gaskets and the hard line between the pump and filter. i thought for sure it was going to be more. The true second gen piston pump was 10$ cheaper at $98 and the old style was $105.00, ow well i need fuel pressure.

whats the cheapest fuel preasure gauge money can buy that works??

Mine cost $10, I got it from Surplus Center. Pressure is pressure. Mine says "Water."

whats the max psi i could be seein of this new piston pump, its going to be the isb piston pump, i cant wait to get it, ive heard it should be alittle more jumpy with fuel preasure, what exactly happens to the diaphram pump that makes it go bad, mine had 17 years on the factory pump, id say thats pretty good.

Ben, would you happen to have the Cummins part #'s for the piston pump, spacer, the two gaskets, and the hard line you could give to me? I know that they are in the sticky(ies), but I just wanted the most up to date numbers so that they don't look at me like they don't know anything if I were to happen to give an outdated #. Thanks.

ISB's have electric lift pumps.

If you used the part number in the sticky you will get at least 12 psi but probably more like 15 psi.

All kinds of things can go bad with the diaphragm pumps, but if it wasn't leaking then the check valves were worn out or one of the springs broke.

ok heres the numbers, the hard line that i ordered didnt even come close to being the right line, i cut up the old fuel line and the 37$ new line and put bumps on them with a double flairing tool, then put clamps and a hose in between, cummins northwest was stumped as to what line to use. the fuel supply line held great with the bumps and the hose, trust me it saw nothing but torture

total w/ a hat and a shirt $200.00

Wannadiesel, is there a difference in filter location between non ic and ic?

early isb engines (pre 94) used the VE pump with the low pressure piston pump,

btw, i fell in love with my truck again, it sees alot of fuel now, it works best at wot in combination with the 366 spring, nothing but fuel all the way. it fell alot more responcive as well, i should have done this 2 years ago when i got the truck,

my records show the hard line # to be 3914753. I haven't bought it yet, so I am not sure it is right. I also show a different number for the pump. 3936320.

No, the filters are in the same place.

ISB's are electronic. If it's got a VE it ain't an ISB.
