PDR Hot Rod VE Pump?

Ok what's the story on this? Seems they can build one for your desired HP level, and the price is about the same as a stock reman VE. The guy @ PDR was supposed to call me back (he didn't know jack about VE pumps) but didn't.

Here's what I gathered from what he said: They can build any level VE pump, all the way up to a 14mm H/R w/ 4mm C/P. He said he thought, however, that their guys could hop up a regular old 12mm pump pretty good, too, and improve reliability in the process. He implied that it involved much more than a GSK, Custom Pin, and tuning. What do they do over there? I've heard murmurings of cut delivery valves and oversized injector line outputs and such. I have also heard of people grinding and porting and polishing internal VE parts for some effect or another.

So what's the deal? Can they really do that much more than we can on a regular old 12mm VE? Are they worth it?

I have one. But i haven't installed it yet. KTA is going to flow test it on his bench to see how it does.

I'm assuming you got the most hopped up 12mm they make?

Was the price (out the door) close to what they told me (roughly same price as a stock reman)?

I have what they call the "hot rod" pump. It is still 12 mm though. It ran me $1795 + a core pump. I feel like I overpaid. They told me it was good for 450 whp on fuel only. Thing is, a stock VE gets pretty close to that (see: BC847).

When I do finally install it, I will probably pull their fuel pin and install my Denny T stage 1 pin. I suspect the cut on their pin is likely pretty drastic to make power.

In retrospect, I should have sent a pump off to Brian Giles. I hear good things about his work.

I thought about having one sent off, but I was worried about turn around time. Seems like, with shipping both ways, your truck could be out of commission for a month or better.

What kind of stuff does your pump have done to help output? Did they mention anything significant? Delivery valves, etc?

And I'm guessing they just had one laying around ready to ship when you ordered it?

They really didn't get into specifics when I was on the phone with them. I don't really remember though, I ordered the pump like 18 months ago. They didn't mention anything significant.

They had to build it when I ordered it, it took 2-3 weeks, but I bought a junk pump to send as a core. I got charged a little extra because the core had some busted parts they had to replace.

Neither Fatt or I is running one, I don't know anything about them, but I kinda doubt they do much more than grind the fuel cone and crank the screw in.

I've heard there are other little internal things you can do... but what? I'm not sure.

Maybe larger cam with 12mm head?

I'm pretty sure PDR has a fuel & injection shop next door that does their pumps too. HIGHLY doubtful there's anything more custom than 366 spring, fuel cone and fuel screw, considering it's a pump shop, trained by Bosch. If anyone's ever dealt with most pump shops, they'll understand what I'm getting at.

If it were me spending the money for the thing, before the cash hit the table, I'd expect answers to questions like: How much fuel does the stock/OEM IP put out? How much does your hot-rod IP put out? Do you in fact swap the governor spring and if so, with what rpm spring? Do you modify the fuel pin? And so on.

Will my stock/OEM lift-pump be sufficient or will I need to upgrade the fuel supply?

For the money, if they can't find the time to answer these and similar questions, I'd move on.

Sounds like good advice, BC.

I am anxious to see the flow bench results of yours, Head.
