Parts for checkng Intercooler system

I need to pressurize the entire intercooler system. I tried to pressurize it from the end of the intake pipe that came out of the air filter. That was ok until the cap blew out at just under 10lbs.

Is there a rubber boot I can get that has an ID of 4"? I went to the Home Depot and they had nothing. What are you guy's using to come off the compressor? I can't seem to fine anything that will fit.

You must've gone to a lame Home Depot. They have 4" rubber couplers, there's one connecting the new PVC to the old cast iron on my toilet plumbing. I got it at the K of P Home Depot, which has to be the smallest one around here. Try anothe one, they do carry them. Just get a 4" rubber coupler, a short piece of pipe, and a cap or plug.

Not as easy as is seems. The boot has to be 4" ID. The 4" boots they have are for 4" ID. The problem is that comes down to 4 1/2" ID to allow for the thickness of the walls of the 4" pvc. Now if I could get one that was for 3 1/2 " it would fit, only problem is they don't make it.

On the other hand I know these guys are doing what I want to do. I just need to know how they are doin it.

Anyway I got it to almost 10lbs and didn't hear any leaks and it seemed to hold pressure pretty well.

Seems to me you would not only want to pressurize the intercooler but also the hoses to see if there is a leak at any connection. I would get a 4 inch test plug or cap at a hardware store and attach it to one side...... then get a short section of 4 inch abs or pvc pipe with a cap. Install a schrader valve ( valve stem) on the end of the cap and glue it on then attach it to the hose with a hose clamp. I've never tried this but it seems to make sense to me. I could be all wet. lol

Ok I wasn't sure I could stretch it 1/2". I'll give it a try in the morning. I guess a 3" end would measure 3.5" maybe I can get that one on. I'll try anyway and see.

That's what I am trying to do. The problem is the size of the exit on the compressor is 4". The only "boot" I could find was 4.5". I will go back tomorrow and see if I can get something that will stretch over the compressor. I know this can be done. I just have to get the right stuff.

You will only need 15-20 psi max to do the test too.... If you go too high you will find that the plugged end of the fitting will pop off the turbo inlet, and pooch the back of the alternator, or worse yet, you finger THEN the alternator.... you should see Pier's black finger ... we don't wanna go there.....

Yea I don't need that for sure. I tried to pressurize the system by plugging the intake tube at the air filter. Since they put that metal ring in there there isn't much for the plug to hold on to. I can only get just under 10 lbs before it pops. I am goin to head to the plumbing store to see if I can get a boot to go over the compressor outlet then over the plug. I am hopeing to get into the 15 to 20 lb range. At about 8 lbs I can't hear any leaks.

Correct me if I'm wrong guys. If I were trying to test my intercooler and hoses for leaks I wouldn't pressurize it from the air cleaner hose as this pressurizes the turbo and exhaust of the engine and would certainly leak down. I would pressurize it from the intercooler hose that comes off of the turbo and cap the side that goes to the intake manifold. Maybe this is what you did wrong thumbs?????
