You're lucky you found that rust on the floor when you did. Usually the floor boards rust from the inside out.

A couple of days after I purchased the truck, I pulled the carpeting out.... well, I cut it out. There still remains some sound deadener and carpeting under the seats, but for the most part, it's gone. I installed rubber mats and occasionally, I pull up the mats just to confirm no moisture is under there, as I remember my other dodge, and it had no floorboard under there.... welll, that's a lie, as it had a piece of plywood under the mat.

Anytime I find any moisture under there, I leave the truck open for a while, and air it out. IMO, preventive maintenance is the only hope for these trucks...
