Painting a VE Pump?

I just bought a new VE pump from Haisley Machine (see other thread). The pump comes silver, but I want it to be red (I've got a theme going on underhood). I'm thinking spray it with engine enamel with the shipping covers on all the ports. Is there more to it? Am I going to screw something up or make something bind by painting it Should I leave it silver?

if you dont paint with catalyst, the fuel can break down the finish with any exposure

Unpainted is the best. No paint chips to fall inside the pump at a later date when doing pump work. A silver/aluminum, unpainted pump really sets off a painted engine, IMO.

You may be right. I wasn't blown away by the pic that Haisley sent me of the silver pump, but it might look great on my black/red engine. Good point.

The factory pumps always had a thick coat of Cummins engine paint on them, and it stood up well to fuel leaks, but what was mentioned about paint chips is sure true. Any line or bolt on those pumps that you touched a wrench to would get flakes of paint everywhere, inside fittings if you weren't careful.

We two-toned the son's VE-pump when we re-sealed it a few years ago; candy-apple red and chrome silver.

We used plain enamel spray-cans, three coats of each color, followed by three coats of spray-can clear enamel.

It looks as good today as it did then.

I intend to do likewise when I re-seal the pump on my truck.

Does painting void their warranty? If yes, then no paint until the warranty expires!

I do believe that even spray canned clear coat has catalyst in it, which is probably the answer the OP needs.

Mark.

I believe 1stgenfarmboy polished the pump top cover. It is probably pretty time consuming, but it looks great!
