There is a product PEELAWAY that I have used before that can take off 4 or 5 layers of paint in one application. The best part of using this product is that it is not messy and it is very easy to use.

I wondered bout aircraft stripper. A lot of aluminum cleaners and such are acid based. I didn't know if it would eat into the grille or not. I've got some old grilles I could test it on.
the grill in my 78 was a army grill. oven cleaner works well. heat up the grill a bit with a torch (LITTLE bit) and it strips better. test a area first though to be safe. afterwards it was poilished. i did my side trim that way too.
since then i bought a soda blaster. thats how i would do it now

if you go to my site you will see some pics of a few of the projects i have done. Soda will not hurt the aluminum., it will not etch glass or cut into the substrate of any metal. only thing it may hurt is plastic (like taillights) but that depends on what plastic and who is doing the blasting.
on a job like the grill it would probably take me 10 minutes to strip it
