Overfilled & Smoooth
Drained & overfilled the gearbox yesterday, and am I glad I did. First, it's a rebuild, and the oil that came out looked like silver nail polish, from break-in I guess (hope). Second, because I used synth (Walmart house brand), the transmission shifts much more smoothly & easily. I didn't have as much trouble as I thought i would re-seating the shifter, but a rag or glove is essential for pushing down & holding it comfortably. Also, MAKE SURE that the transmission is in neutral before removing the shifter, or replacing it will be a pain in the rump. I had to find neutral with a screwdriver in order to finish. Oh-- and I gave it an additional quart.

I would be willing to bet your silver oil is from aluminum worn off of the shifter forks. The most likely cause is excessive endplay of the mainshaft. I would check it again pretty soon as you will likely have trouble in the future. My 1990 had some silvery oil come out of it and the main shaft had over an 1/8 inch of movement. My .02.
