Overdrive? TPS? Speed Sensor?

I asked a similar question recently but I may have misunderstood the answers I got. I'm going to rephrase the question...

My truck is having trouble shifting into (and dropping out of) Overdrive. I did a search and read some posts but I am a diesel-novice and need a little guidance. My truck is a '92, auto trans. The speedometer is reading correctly (no bouncing) and, except for overdrive, the tranny is shifting normally.

Do I need a new Speed sensor? A new TPS? What do you suggest?

I just finished fine tuning my o/d shifting. do a search on TPS adjustment and all the info you will need is there, its easy. there is a few different reasons for the shift oddities, fliud temp, and TPS settings.

Mine did the exact same thing as yours and it was the TPS.

Before I threw the auto to the junk yard, I would unplug my tps and clean the connections with some electronic cleaner. Sometimes just unplugging and plugging it back in would cure it for a while. Never replaced it because of the cost and the plans to install a 5-speed.
