overdrive on 92
while pulling a hill on i-40 going west today my truck quit pulling twice. i changed fuel filter, but it was clean. it did same thing on way back. just quit pulling in o/d. i still had other gears but on driver side of transmission there is some sort of device that controls speedometer and overdrive. it appeared to be loose or broke but i shoved it back in and speedometer resumed working. this thing is still kinda loose. is there a way to repair or do i need a new one and how do i go about it? thax in advance for replies
VSS or Vehicle Speed Sensor is one of the inputs that tells the tranny to go into OD. If it quits working, you won't have any OD...as you experienced. There's no way to repair it that I know of. Napa part is VSS100 an run you about $50. Just unscrew and unplug the old one and put the new one on. Takes about 2 minutes!
If you're in a bind you can manually ground the OD circuit on the tranny to get it into 4th. I *think* but I'm not absolutely sure, that it's the orange wire coming out of the driver's side. The OD is simply switched to ground. So just ground the orange wire with a manuel switch and you'll have OD back. Someone else could certainly confirm this for me.

I think the same thing happened to mine. It kept jumping out just enough to quit working, so I clamped it in with a small hose clamp and haven't had a problem in about a year now. Hope this helps, Darl Absher III
