Ounces of Freon

How many pounds/ounces of freon approximately do our systems hold? Oil included. 3 pounds? Thats what I've got in there now and it acts like it would take more. I'm using a cheap filler guage so I have no idea what the high side is doing. Dumb I know... Anyway if I can find out what our systems are supposed to take then I'll be done with this. Thanks

It should say on the core support in front of the radiator. BTW Did you pull vacuum on the system?

All of the tags on my core support and hood are faded and can no longer be read. I didn't pull vacuum on the system this time. Last time I filled it I did go to vacuum. The system still had freon in it so I just pulled the schrader valve, Screwed on my new R-12 to R134 fitting, and let it go down to about 1 psi of pressure and capped it off. Then added the 3 lbs of good freon. There should still be no oxygen in the system.

How much pressure are you seeing on the suction side? It should be in the 22-30psi range at 90deg ambient temp. Book calls for 22-39, but we all know better performance can be had by hanging on the low side. BTW- it took one can of R134A to reach 25psi in my system; 200psi on the compressor side. This is at idle, and not 1100rpm as per the FSM, so my actual test results may vary.

tape a good thermometer on the suction line and add gas til it gets as cold as it will add until the temp starts climbing then remove back to the coldest point. then you will have it the best it will do.

My hood sticker says 1.08kg. I put 1.2 in and I will see how it does. It will leak down to 1.08 in a month or so.
