Hi all, I have a 91 SCLB W250 with the 3 speed auto, I already turned my pump up and have a Denny 2 fuel pin, 32 gov spring, I am wanting to be in the 400+/- hp range I don't wanna sled pull, maybe take it to the track now and then, I'm not too worried about towing maybe just a little 2 axle trailer every blue moon, I just want my truck to have some get up and go, I know my tranny is going to hold me back as well any ideas??? I'm new to the diesel world FYI
If that 91 came from the factory with the intercooler and later style grille it already has the a518 4speed auto. The transmissions themselves are surprisingly strong but what kills them is heat. Their lack of cooling and crap tq converter are the main culprits. I abused mine pretty bad and so had blacky on here. Mine eventually went out because I literally cooked the fluid in it on accident.
I would definitely get a tight tq converter and some kind of cooling for the transmission. If you have any doubts about the clutches or condition of the internals, just have it rebuilt.
As for the rest of the truck, it's hard to break 400 hp on one of our trucks.
I would recommend an s362/65/14, 4" diamond eye exhaust, and some 5x14 injectors and a low pressure piston lift pump or some other type of lift pump. Your stock lift pump will absolutely not flow enough fuel.
Oh and I hope you have gauges? Trans, pyro, boost, fuel are recommended

The 3 speed in my truck with a fresh rebuild as of dec 2012 and the po said he put all bd parts and that's it's rated for 600hp but the 3 speed is gonna suck at the track I think, lol anyone wanna buy a 3 speed?
The 3 speeds aren't that bad, I made 514rwhp through mine with a 14mm pump and 448rwhp with a 12mm (both with nitrous), and that was with my timing all messed up. If you can spin the rpm, you'll be fine. Tune it for 350rwhp and be happy. You can see if you have enough gear for the track here:

buy a good tq converter from goerends or suncoast. You'll be happy you did. Little bigger tires will help on the top speed side of things but make it a little more sluggish out of the hole. Not that our trucks really have a problem getting out of the hole once we do a few power mods.
