well broke the flexplate last week.
2 nd gen in and put the race version of TCS's converter in..$800 dollar converter

seams good but not quite sold on the price yet...maybe my expectations were high,
anyway two days later the head gasket puked.

so iam wanting to port/valve grind.and o-ring it while iam in there

what are the does and donts....and where is the best places . and prices
.i dont want to walk in the door of the nearest porting place with my pants down..

and should i cut the intake off??

looking for 500hp RELIABLE dailydriver hp.

I don't think the 24 valve head is needed to make 500 horse, but I don't think you'll make that with a 12mm ve either. I hope my 93 will break 400, but I haven't dynoed it yet so I don't know. It is fun to drive though.

yep scratch the 24valve head idea.

and 500hp is the final goal........and ill spray it to get there.

mods in sig. and iam prepared to get:
6x16's
twin the he351 with a hx55or ht3b
and get the pump worked to flow 350+cc .just not sure if the 14mm head is a reliable daily driver item.

got a price on the head work

$300-o-ring
$250 valve grind
$900 ported

seams fair
so with studs and gasket.............approx $2300

i guess ill be keeping this truck forever

I'd avoid the 14mm head for a daily driver. I've talked to kta, giles, and schied about them and they all said some last and some don't.

with 6x16 and he351 it will be tough to hit 500.....be close i think to 430

so is the max exaust porting 180 cfm?

how do they port the intake without milling off the intake plenum?

\anyone here seen the zz intake plenum in action?? or anything similar

My guess is they do some work from the valve side, and i think you can reach pretty far down from the intake side too...

Greg Young is a friend of mine, he is the owner of ZZ Fabrication. His work is top notch! He has ported many heads, he has cut them apart everyway possible and done TONS of R&D with 12 valve stuff. He has had his latest head digitized and now has a cnc program for the 12 valve head. He would be your best bet for good info on what to do and what not to do. Super nice guy but is also a one man show so dont call and talk his ear off for hours.

Unless your planning a piston swap as well the 24v head is a no go.

So your at $1450 for the valve job, the rings , and the porting. Where are you getting studs and a gasket that costs $850? Studs are around $400 for standard ARP's and a gasket is around $120. Wheres the extra cost?

Porting the bowls, the area above the valve, without the intake milled off is usually the standard.

I built a plenum like ZZ's for my p pump 24v with a CR head, only because the intake was milled off and the head was fully ported. For 500hp, milling the intake is a waste of money, and in my opinion and extensive port job is as well. Clean up the bowls and match the exhaust, a good valve job will yield better results for less.

dragging up this old post..

still havent fixed the truck...been back to work after 5 months off in school...

iam going to retourqe the head and and try to stop the weep..
and then pull my 20 ft enclosed trailer over a 5000ft mountain pass
but i want to get my truck and trailer home out of my parents driveway.

after that look for a good core to send in so there is no more down time, give me a chance to build a intake plenum and not pressed/stressed for time and$$

i got the guy that ports PDR's heads to give me a quote
-for the port, valve job,o-rings,mill the head in the $1600 mark with tax
studs $500 with tax
head gasket $180 cummins

Questions

1)i live in cold weather....-20 winters how will the lower compression effect me if i use the .020 gasket?
even if i have a espar or coolant heater??

2)is the only way to clean up the intake side is to mill the plenum off?

3) will water meth and possible future twins make the .020 gasket manditory?

4)Have the aftermarket intakes(bolt on) plenums "proven themself" CFM #'s?

5)will a equal length intake header affect spool up? or just the exhaust side??

6)will i see any REAL IN THE SEAT OF YOU PANTS MPG SAVINGS

Hitting 500 to the wheels with spray is one thing, fuel is another. With spray you can leave everything mostly stock and just get big injectors and a turbo that'll live. I hit 448 with a home made nitrous kit, compressor upgrade, intake, exhaust, and Goerend converter. With timing in it I think it would have been close to 500.

what kind of hp/tq numbers you put up??
and MPG if you have any??

and who did your porting?

the more i read about milling the head the more i dont want to do it..
unless your 4000+rpm and 600hp woth of fuel i wont even notice it..

i thought of building the intake as a fun project.......but maybe a waste of time

my ultimate goal is 400 hp that i can drive....affordably seriously

after porting ill spend money on whatever tranny upgrades needed
water meth
better injectors sdx .14/.16 or the likes
cam
valve springs
and a budget twin set up

then thats it ................old lady wont let me spend more

I'm hoping to make 400-450 on fuel, and 600-700 on nitrous. J&H Performance did my head, I believe the o-ringing was pretty cost effective.

You should be able to hit 400 pretty easy with head work, a cam, twins, and injectors. Might want to even get a set of spare 6x18s for dyno events or foolin around.

i know how to make the power..thats easy $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

the more$$$$$$$$$$$$ = hp.

if i had the $8k to spend at once id run the 600hp trucks down

i like doing things budget as a challenge.
i have too many hobbys ................own lots of half good junk and nothing great

its the 400hp tow monster that can get 17mpg empty,13 towing
thats the challenge
