one more time, swap or no?
one more time, swap or no?
Had the guy with the NV4500 give me another price last weekend. Has a NV rebuild by a big trans shop in denver... can't remember the name right now. The trans was sent in on warranty several times from a 5th gear failure and he decided to go to a 6spd.
Anyway this trans is a rebuild again and he has never installed it. Comes with southbend clutch and 2nd gen bellhousing.
He now wants $1k. I am just hesitant to go with it since he was having so many 5th gear problems with these things, but he is running quite a bit of power and towing 20Klbs all over the place.
??? decisions decisions
I am really inclined just to stay with the old getrag. Would still need another $500 bucks in parts at least to get this NV swapped in.

If it was repaired correctly that a great deal. If it wasn't repaired correctly maybe you can buy the parts and have him do the repair correctly before you buy it.
For what it is worth, I know a man that runs a manufacturing company that keeps a dozen or more 1-ton Dodge/Cummins 5-speeds on the road, all across America, pulling 40' to 53' flatbeds.
I looked at a couple of them the other day that had well over 1,000,000 miles on them.
They do as many repairs as possible in-house.
We discussed the 5th gear problem and he said that no matter which locking method was tried, after the nut once backs off, it is destined to back off again, only sooner each time, unless the main-shaft is replaced.
He now sends problem transmissions somewhere in Texas and has a new, fully splined shaft installed.

For $1K if you don't want it I'll bite!!
Here is the addy for the BEST NV mainshaft
http://www.standardtransmission.com/
Full splined mainshaft with a new 5th gear and nut for a bit over 3 bills.
Very reasonable and high quality products.
