Oil Pan Questions

I have a 93 D250 with 169000 and I have the engine out so I thought I'd replace the oil pan gasket but have a few questions. First though, I want to mention that I don't have an engine stand so I'm wondering about any suggestions for doing this. Though I don't like doing it, how do people feel about doing it with the engine on the hoist?

As for the gasket itself, I'm assuming it's installed dry except for some bits of RTV at the corners of the timing cover and the rear crankshaft seal housing. Is this correct? What type of sealant should I use? I'm thinking Permatex Ultra-Grey? Do you let it dry a little (20 mins.) before bolting up? How much should I put on? Do you put any around the bolts?

Do I need to replace the pickup tube gasket? If so does anyone have a p/n?

What's the tightening order for the pan bolts? I'm assuming you start in the middle and criss-cross your way out?

Sorry for all the mundane questions but just want to do it the best I can.

Thanks,
Darin

If you have a hoist that will lift it safely, I'd do the oil pan gasket with it hanging. Just don't lay underneath the thing.

@ofcmarc - That's what I was thinking I'd probably do, but I might have a lead on a #1250lb stand for cheap so we'll see.

Off topic: I'm a former Alaskan as I was born and raised in Homer.
