NY state laws

On my way home last night state trooper pulled me over. I had a head light out on the passenger side (I thought something was strange but I couldn't tell). I just was out of work and I left my truck running because the engine was no where near warm and it was 15F out.

It was a young kid probably just out of training as he was very cautious. He asked me if I knew why he pulled me over and I honestly had no idea. He said I had a headlight out. Then he told me my exhaust was way too loud and I would need to get it fixed as he could barely hear himself think. He came back with a fix it ticket..

I have a diamond eye 4" kit on there that I just spent money on.. so I'm not sure what I can fix it with. I replaced the headlight last night. I've never seen such a messed up thing..

Does a turbo count as a muffler in NY? If so, you should be good.

Is it exhaust noise he was complaining about or the mechanical noise of the engine? sometimes cops just hear noise and don't know where it is comming from.

Do you have a muffler?
A resonator might help tune the frequencies out.

Just get near the engine on a loaded 16-cylinder Standby Diesel Genset to see what mechanical noise is.

When I get pulled over with a loud exhaust, be it by design or destruction, I just shut the engine off and let my teeth chatter a little. It's not worth the confrontation.

When I drive past one sitting, I'll stay out of the throttle for the same reason.

If in your statge a modified exhaust is illegal. You might have to put a muffler on it, or if you get a real stickler, put stock exhaust on.

It seems to me there was a thread on here about putting a better muffler on the diamond eye 4" system. I think they recommended a Donaldson muffler but not sure. Just my two cents, Mike.

I have it hard to believe a new exhaust system making any difference in how loud it idles.... you could put the quietest muffler on there and the engine would still be loud. What a jerk!

I have the diamond eye kit with a muffler. The lady and I were sick of the stacks.. those were loud as hell. The new exhaust is quiet but it's still not that quiet.

I went to the court today and they tossed the ticket. What a waste of my time, money and fuel. They tried to charge me $10 for processing fees and I told them I already burnt that driving there and back. The world has changed that is for sure..

Not sure about a muffler but my straight 4" DE is no different, at idle, then my dads factory exhaust with the muffler deleted except for a little more turbo whistle right at the tailpipe. Cops suck

Virginia is the same way as NY when it comes to Exhausts. What aggravates me, you can have a Motorcycle with straight pipes, and never get a ticket... Double standard at its finest.

I was born and raised in Albany NY and left in the 1960s for a job in CA. When asked why I left both states I said I did not leave I escaped! Now that CA liberals have taken over OR it looks as if I've got to escape from OR You have hit on the reasons I left with both NY & CA among the top states for debt the choises I made seem quite reasonable.

Loud exhaust used to sound cool but after years working in the pits with open exhaust on 8-V71&92 Detroit's running up against the governor, 30 years later has left me with permanent hearing damage, and a loud ringing in my ears.

1st Gen's have alot of mechanical noise especially if the hood insulator and tappet cover insulator are missing.

That's an easy one to explain......

Cops ride motorcycles, so they've essentially become exempt from the noise ordinances. Police officers have "discretion", meaning that they can pick and choose which ordinances / laws to enforce. They simply look the other way.

Donuts are also on their list, so feel free to ride around in your truck eating them whenever you like....
