Nv5600

Is there any downside to putting the NV5600-6 Speed in our truck?

the 6 spd take a lot of work to git in and it is one notchy sucker to shift and slow ,ask any one who drives one if towing a 6 spd is wonderful but driving in town sucks I have 2 and friends with 6spds and all feel the same love it towing but its to notchy in town ...drives like a big truck where the 5spd is smooth

hey-Hey!!!,
The 5600 is more tolerant of low rpm use in top gear than the 4500. Shifting quickly( or not in this case), will serve the valuable purpose of keeping me off the dragstrip with it. It also allows the use of the ETH-spec clutch, which is one smooooth son ov a gun.
cheers,
Douglas

I'm with you on that Douglas, ... I'd dearly love to have another gear, particularly in the long split between 2nd and 3rd where pulling heavy up a hill I roar the motor in 2nd, and by the time I catch 3rd it's already lugging and I often have to slip back to 2nd. I also like my Luk clutch, smooth yet has good solid lock-up, ...

Skip a gear driving in town. Really, it's a 4spd with granny low and OD.

When I test drove 6spd trucks. I used 2nd, 3rd, 4th. No need for 5th or 6th in town under 40. By the time you could grab it, some either turns in front of you or you need to slow down.

Now, for coming out of town, I used 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th. A little bit of lugging for 5th but the motor was about wound out.

To do this in a 1st Gen, you NEED a 3200 rpm spring. Otherwise hit all the gears.

okay, cool. thanks for the advice. For some reason my body always wants to grab another gear after I have hit 5th. I think in the NV4500's the big split is between 3rd and 4th. it seems that way to me anyways.

I love mine and can shift it fairly fast. I do like the fact that you KNOW when it's in gear too. I never use 1st unless I'm pulling a load though. Otherwise, start in 2nd and on up to 5th if the law allows a 45mph speed limit. I prefer to keep RPMs just under or at 2,000, even around town. 1st is way to low to start out with empty and 2nd is an awfully short gear but it would hate me if I tried to start in 3rd from a dead stop.

driven them all.

nv5600 in our trucks is huge pita to fit..........tranny is huge!!! lots of mods to get it in.
expensive.
only hold approx 500hp
when it blows up you cant get parts
time you get it in the truck you could have had a built auto.

nv4500 cheap
easier swap
can take more hp and abuse
parts are cheaper
make more hp then the gap wont feel so bad between 3-4

g56
better if you NEED the 6 speed
cheaper to find
same pita *** to install.

BUILT auto.............my choice.

id just build the 518 if you are under 450 hp and put a good converter in it.thats what i should have done. way to much $$$ for a billit 47rh

I would like to know where you got this information. I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just saying there are some people running far more than 500hp through a stock NV5600 with no problems. I personally believe the NV5600 is stronger than the NV4500. If you have the proof, by all means please prove me wrong. As for the shifting, it's not easy to shift the NV5600 fast, but I've never had a problem shifting mine, I love it, I'm running close to 500hp through it and it hasn't complained one little bit, and I have no idea why everyone says it's "notchy." My dad had an 03 with the NV5600 too and I never had a problem shifting it either and I never thought it was "notchy."

After a careful cataloging of mods to my 1990, my first reaction to this goes something like, 'what the fork are you talking about?'
cheers,
Douglas

well i know of 2 nv5600's that have packed it in. one 3rd gear and another piled everything up.
numerous with bad synchro's

look up replacement parts for the nv5600................good luck.
still a good tranny dont get me wrong . iam just not interested in shifting 3 times through a intersection. and if you jump gears why bother.just get the cheap and tough nv4500 with the big input..

and if you dont think the nv5600 is notchy and finiky to shift you are lying

if you want a manual to tow get the g56......then the nv5600
if you want a manual to play get the nv4500

if you want best of both worlds BUILD A AUTO

i looked high and dry for a manual as my truck does 90% towing.
the swap would have cost me more then the $5000 dollar tranny i bought

the cheapest 6 speed i could find was $1500 plus clutch/bellhousing/slave/pedal assembly/drive shaft mods etc.

REMEMBER TO EACH THERE OWN.

i love manuals in toy's just not the tow rig.

when i pass you on the next big climb with a cold drink in my hand ill wave
