NO spedo or o.d. in "92"

Help! I have just joined, in the hopes that you all out there can help me with one of the problems with my truck. Three weeks ago I lost the spedo in my truck, the next day that I used it, I din't have o.d. are these two items conected?? or will this be seperat problems that need to be delt with? The trans is good but just will not shift into od. I had this problem before and got riped on a rebuild in the trans, that was a loss of $2900 the HARD way. I need to know where the elect switches are so I could look at them my self. I do all the work myself now. But I have no book at this time. The day before that it quit working (od) it was working ok with no problems. I now have 252,987 miles on the truck and it still is running strong! 200,000 of it I put on myself in the last 5 years. I just love this thing! Any help would be very helpfull right now, and thanks RB

Welcome to the site.

Your problem lies with the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) on the transfer case or the tail of the trans, depending on wether you are 2wd or 4wd. It won't go into OD without a signal for how fast it's going.

It could be just plan worn out like mine was or less common, the square drive could be stripped and not turning. Also don't forget to check the wire and make sure it's not broken somewhere.

Don't forget to fill out your signature under the User CP on the left side of the screen so we know what you have and whats been done to it.

Sometimes the VSS works loose and falls off, too. Time to crawl under for a look. The VSS is located where you'd expect a speedometer cable to attach.

I just bought a 91 as well. I have the no speedometer, odometer, or OD problem also. The VSS didn't solve it for me as I replaced that. I am thinking it could be the TPS or the RWAL sensor. Alot of people are talking about checking the grounds I guess that may be a start also. I just go with the flow of traffic and use this truck for around town driving til it is fixed. Good Luck

Hay thanks. I just was not sure where to look for the switch. I will look at it as soon as it is dry out, we are getting lots of rain out this way. Also I work 3rd shift at a hospital, and have not had the time to crall around this truck. Thank God for warmer weather. I had a BIG thing going on with the elect system in Oct-Nov. I was able to get it solved in Dec with the help of this web page. Thanks because I was at a loss with it. The shops could not help. I will post what was going on soon to let all you know what was going down with it so it may help out some of you out there. RB, LONG LIVE THE DIESEL RAM TRUCK!!!!!! Would anyone have a part ## for this item?? so I am sure to get the right thing, also is this going to be a dealer item or can I go to any parts shop for it?? Thanks

Gotta be a wiring issue between the VSS and the rest of the truck. TPS has nothing to do with the speedo not working. RWAL is a totally different computer. Don't throw parts at it, find the problem.

On a 2wd, it's on the driver's side of the trans almost at the back. 4X4's have it on the transfer case.

Any auto parts store can get you one.

same problem here, replaced vss, gained OD, but still no speedo or odometer. wiring checks out ok, was wondering if the computer could be bad? I have traced the wiring as much as I can from the vss to the speedo, but under the hood it gets lost. Anyonw know the color of the wire I need to trace, or have a extra puter that I can try?
