No more CL-4???

Just recently went to change the oil in all the vehicles and couldn't find any CL-4 rated oil. I went with my trusted Walmart Super Tech oil, and it is no longer CL rated, just CJ. I searched high and low with all brands considered and could not find any.

Do any of you guys run an oil additive when you change the oil in your CTD? I run a Comp Cams engine break in additive added to the oil in my 440 in the wagon, but was considering the same for the CTD.

I can't remember the correct date, but it was sometime this year that CL-4 was being pulled off the shelves. Apparently CJ-4 does everything CL-4, (and all 'CL's' previous to it) does, so I don't think there'd be a problem. I've been running CJ-4 in mine for the last 3 or 4 years and haven't had a problem so far. I know a few of the old school don't like the newer stuff though, but I can't remember why. Too much detergent in the new stuff? Not enough sulphur? Somewhere in my head lies the answer, but I can't recall right now.

I ain't yet seen nor heard of a CL-4 rated oil.

I demand CI-4 and also am a firm believer in plenty of old time STP.

You won't find CI-4 at any of the chain stores.

I buy Kendall Super-D-3 15W-40 CI-4 by the pallet as often as I can afford one and have been stockpiling it for the day when it is completely outlawed.

CJ-4 is maybe a 2,000-mile oil at best; whereas, it is no problem to run CI-4 10,000 or more.

Do what the Government wants you to do, junk your "old" CTD and buy new and help save the enviroment...............I don't see it happening either. Have you ever noticed that "new and improved" usually is not?

The removal of the zinc, and other high pressure additives are what helps keep your lifter, cam, and other parts from wearing prematurely. With almost all motors running roller lifters and low friction components the need for the early high pressure additives are no long required...and the EPA telling us what's good for us doesn't help either.

I think I will just run the comp cams additive, it really can't hurt anything, and I will sleep better.

Sad to say, but not anymore; the last I started to buy was CJ-4, so I passed on it.

Oil supposedly has a shelf life, or so we were told at work by an oil vendor which was also confirmed by our plant chemist. We had to mark the received dates on all of the drums upon receipt. IIRC it was around three years or less. I now use Lucas oil treatment in everything.

No. Foaming at what RPM? All oil has some foaming tendencies while being pumped.

That popular video of the LUCAS foaming was made and posted by a site belonging to a company that manufactures their own brand of magic oil, so I wouldn't take it as gospel.

The testimonials and trust of nearly the whole independent truck owner population of America claims otherwise.

Myself, I think LUCAS is really good stuff; although, I am not completely convinced that it's benefits are enough better than STP's to justify the much higher cost to my poor budget.

I like there stuff. I used it all the time but kinda worried when i saw the video posted on a thread. The newer oils lack MOLY and ZINC. Also TBN is down, I think.....
