NO HORN NO CRUISE! Trip to Tenn. in 3 days !!!!

Hey guys,

I have a 1993 Dodge W250 Cummins 5 speed 4x4 club cab. When I bought the truck the horn did not work and my cruise control doesnt work either. I have to make a long trip to Tennessee and then to Alabama from Michigan and my right foot is already beggin me to get this thing fixed before I leave. Is there anything I can do to narrow down what the problem could be. Does anyone have a repair manual that says what it could be? I searched and some are having problems with the clock spring. Could it be this?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Madison

Since they both don't work I would guess the clockspring. I have figured out that the reason my cruise doesn't work is no continuity through the clockspring. However the horn does work. Also have heard that one person reported they're horn didn't work but the cruise did, also the clockspring.

There is a fuse for both and as always check the simple things first.

your problem is going to be more than likely in the column, first put power to the horn to make shure it works, under the hood. next like WORM said b4 me check your horn and cruise fuses use a test light to make sure theres power there. if your good there start tearing apart the plastics behind the steering wheel check for power at the plug at your clock spring you may want to just pull your steering wheel to make things easier if you got power try out the horn while your wheels apart. you should be able to get the drift of where im going good luck.

I have been reading this thread about the clock spring. My trucks have a digital clock in the radio. Do some trucks have a different type of clock or does this term, clock spring, mean something else ?

the clock spring is what allows you to run electricity to the steering wheel without twisted wires good question. they are used for such things as the horn, cruise control, and even radio control in newer years.its kinda like a u-joint, donut, hybrid.

My money's on the clockspring too.

It's called a clockspring because inside it looks like the spring in an old wind-up clock. The conductors are printed on a coil of plastic.

Don't feel like the lone dummy; as, I was just fixing to also ask what a clock-spring was.

With a long trip looking you in the face, wouldn't you be wiser to install a seperate horn-button, wired into the horn, and leave the column intact, until you get back and have more time ??

That is just my way of thinking.

It's no big deal on these trucks, you just pull the steering wheel and the clockspring is right there.

Take it from me, it is the clockspring. I went through all the Field service manuals fault checks, and the final icing on the cake was no power to the cruise control switches, and slowly the horn wasn't working while the steering wheel was turned all the way left, then finally the scraping noises. Dealer item for $165.00, and like Wanna said, pull the steering wheel, remove the old Clockspring by pressing inward the two tabs, and drop the new one in. Reconnect all wiring after the steering wheel is bolted back down(careful that you don't pinch off the new clockspring wires with the steering wheel)and you are done.

My cruise doenst work at all, but my horn does. Now, Im not sure if it only works in certain areas cause I really dont use my horn, I have other methods of getting peoples attention on the road.
Could the clock spring still be a factor?

Check the wiring just below where it plugs into clockspring, mine has broke twice along with broken wire in clockspring. First time it quit I was ambitious an took clockspring apart and soldered wire lasted about 5 yrs. Lazy and bought new one last time.
