Well I don't have brake lights anymore, they just up and quit working. Bulbs are good and all other lights work. Could this be a switch problem? What's the procedure for diagnosis?

 

did you check the fuse under the dash?

 

Check the fuse, as Nathan said, but if it's ok, it is pretty common for the switch to slip in the holder. Do a search because I recall some clever solutions...Mark

 

All the fuses are find and I took the switch out and still couldn't get it to do anything.

 

Try disconnecting the connector to the lights, it is right in the rear near the middle of the bumper and put 12 volts to it. The brake lights are the brighter filament. If they come on, try to find the connector farther upstream and do the same. Did you test the switch when you had it out? Mark

 

Trace your wires back from the firewall as well.

I started there until I found my spare had been rubbing the frame with the loom pinched in between. Once I got inside the loom and found the damage I got to stop pulling out my hair.

 

Check for 12v to the switch. If it's there, check for 12 on the load side of the switch with the pedal depressed. If you don't have 12v out of the switch to the load side, the switch is bad. If you do have 12v on the load side start checking the wires down stream...

 

I notice that there are 3 wires to the switch, any help on what the 3rd one is then?

 

you have cruise control? brake shuts it off

after brake switch "brake on" power wire goes to turnsignal switch and flasher, failing switch can terminate brake light output, has your switch felt loose, or turn sig lights work interemittantly?
