newbie question

was wondering what the stock rev limiter is set at. Yesterday I turned up the fuel load screw on top of the pump under the plug, and was hitting the limiter at 1500 or so according to my tach.

Stock governed speed is like 2300 or thereabouts.

Two thousand three hundred revolutions per minute.

The pump smart guys can chime in here if I get this wrong, but as I understand it, there's no smacking of a limiter as you might see in an electronically controlled-type rev limiter. The stock govenor spring in the pump head is tensioned so as to start de-fueling in that range. That's why I said "thereabouts." It just stops delivering more fuel at that point.

You may need to calibrate your tach.

Put in a 3200 GSK and it won't defuel until around 3200 rpm. Makes a BIG difference.

Fill in your signature so we know what you drive and Welcome!

Am I mixed up ??

I always understood stock maximum RPM to be governed at 2700 RPM.

Mine will rev to 2700 or so and level off.

There's a difference between the defuel point and max RPM. I'm sure yours defuels (stops pulling hard) around 2500 RPM. It won't do much work at 2700 RPM, when loaded it will bog down to a little under the defuel point and then start working.

I put this in my profile, but now in my sig. I am on a mission to make this truck a capable machine. I bought it from a friend of mine who let this rig go to hell, and will make him see the errors of his ways. I have plans, but first I need to get the mechanicals humming.

Wel i have a 3200 spring in, and after popping the plug and giving the top fuel torx screw a good 2.5 turns, the rpm gauge was reading 1500 rpm when the engine made what sounded like and felt like a limiter smack. i have zero experience with this on a diesel, but have felt similar sensations on my previous toys (hopped up ls1 camaros). Still I am not arguing just wondering what it was when I heard this smack and the power down?? Since the tach only read 1300-1500 I was wondering what it could be? Sounded good and violent. How would I calibrate tach if I wanted to? Autometer z series.

What kind of boost are you seeing? I don't know what a smack is but you could have blown a intercooler boot? It should pull hard to 3200 rpm. What kind of speed are you running when it hits 1500 RPM? There is no rev limiter on these trucks. Do you have a waste gate on your turbo? 600 is very low for your EGTs. The screw you turned, was it on top or on the back of the pump?

The screw that you turned on the top of the pump under the cap was the smoke screw. It produces more smoke at lower rpms. The full fuel screw is on the rear of the pump close to the engine and it should have a small black cap that almost looks like a cone.

about 10 on boost, tach reads 1300 at max. today I was driving on freeway and was barely getting 60 on speedo, tach struggling to hit 1300. egts 4-6, right foot in the floor. It was the smoke screw I messed with. Today I took the welded tab of the fuel screw, but it was getting dark so I did not turn screw. what is the max egt we can safely run? I do not ever tow, and really just plan to use this rig for some fishing and hunting and light trips to lumber yard?
